The Wellsville-Middletown boys track team didn’t capture another district championship after competing in the Class 1, District 2 meet on May 4 at New Haven.
Still, the Tigers were able to bring home another district plaque as they placed second out of 15 teams with 74 points.
It’s the third year in a row the W-M boys earned a district plaque. In 2022, they placed second in districts at Glagsow to receive their district plaque in program history. Last year, they won the district meet at South Callaway by 24 points for their first district championship.
This year’s W-M boys team will send five athletes to the Sectional 1 meet on May 11 at South Callaway. They are juniors Gage Marshall, Cooper Henderson, Jonah Slovensky and Haskell Davis and freshman Shane Joles.
Senior Bethany Slovensky and freshman Elly Cash will join the five W-M boys at the sectional meet, giving the Tigers a total of seven athletes who will be competing at South Callaway.
The top four finishers in each event at the South Callaway sectional meet qualify for the Class 1 state meet, which is scheduled for May 17-18 at Jefferson City.
Marshall placed first in the high jump in 6-0.75 to win the district championship in that event for the second year in row.
Henderson won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.52 seconds, second in the 300-meter hurdles in 47.74 seconds and second in the high jump in 5-10.75.
Jonah Slovensky finished third in the 110-meter hurdles in 19.50 seconds and fourth in the triple jump in 38.10.5.
The 3,200-meter boys relay team of Joles, Marshall, Davis and Jonah Slovensky came in third in 10:04.63 and the 400-meter relay team of Joles, Henderson, Marshall and Jonah Slovensky finished third in 48.49 seconds.
Marshall, Henderson and Jonah Slovensky will make their third trip to sectionals. Davis and Joles will compete at sectionals for the first time.
Bethany Slovensky will head to sectionals for the fourth time after placing first in the long jump in 15-11.75, 100-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 15.98 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 49.88 seconds and third in the triple jump in 33 feet. The State Fair Community College-bound athlete has won nine district championships in her high school track career.
Cash qualified for the South Callaway sectional meet by finishing third in the 100 in 13.81 seconds and third in the 200 in 28.53 seconds.
Two W-M seniors ended their high school track careers at districts. Meagan Cripe finished sixth in the shot put and seventh in the discus and Jenelle Boeckelman came in ninth in the javelin and helped the 3,200-meter relay team – which also included Cash, junior Della Gosseen and freshman Aubrey Harmon – place fifth.
Stoutland, which had two district individual champions, won the team title in the boys division with 80 points.
The Tigers finished fourth with 57 points in the girls division. Silex won the team title with 140, followed by New Haven in second with 115 and Jamestown in third with 59.
