Three area players named to all-state team

Three area players were named to the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association all-state team, which was released on June 15.

Montgomery County junior Evan Abercrombie was named second-team pitcher in Class 3, while Dylan Alsop (pitcher) and Jacob Hollensteiner (outfielder) were voted honorable mention in Class 1. All three players earned their first all-state baseball awards.

Abercrombie was the Wildcats’ top pitcher all season long, picking up five wins, including a pair of complete-game victories over Whitfield and O’Fallon Christian in the Class 3, District 6 tournament. He also threw a no-hitter in the 13-0 win over Silex on March 29.

Abercrombie was one of three players from the Eastern Missouri Conference who received all-state notice in Class 3. The others were Sean Phillips (first-team pitcher) and Kaden Kinsler (second-team outfielder) of Elsberry. Elsberry eliminated MCHS in the district finals and went on to finish fourth in the state tournament.

There were a total of 58 players on the Class 3 all-state team. St. Pius X of Kansas City, this year’s state champion, had the most selections with five.

Hollensteiner, a senior, earned a spot on the all-state team by turning in his best season of his high school baseball career, hitting .379 with 21 hits and 14 RBIs. In May, he earned all-state honors in track after helping the 3,200-meter relay team finish eighth at the state meet in Jefferson City.

Alsop, a sophomore, went 5-3 with 103 strikeouts and a 2.44 earned run average in his first season with the W-M baseball team.

Hollensteiner and Alsop helped the Tigers finish 11-10 and capture a district championship.
