The Montgomery County Wildcats have enjoyed another outstanding regular season in 2025.
Now, they hope to turn in a strong showing in district tournament play.
MCHS earned the No. 2 seed in Class 3, District 7 tournament at South Callaway High School and drew up a quarterfinal round bye. The Wildcats will play either third-seeded South Callaway or sixth-seeded Missouri Military Academy in a semifinal game at 6 p.m. on May 19 at South Callaway.
North Callaway is the top seed in the tournament and will play either fourth-seeded Centralia or fifth-seeded New Bloomfield in the other semifinal game at 4 p.m. on May 19.
South Callaway and MMA will square off in a quarterfinal game at 6 p.m. on May 15. It will follow the quarterfinal game between Centralia and New Bloomfield.
The championship game is scheduled for 5 p.m. on May 21. All district tournament games will be played at South Callaway.
The Wildcats are looking to win their second district championship in program.history. They won their only title in 2019.
MCHS was eliminated in the district semifinals in each of the last three years. Last year, the Wildcats lost to Elsberry 3-2 in the district semifinals at home. They last played in a district championship game in 2021.
The Wildcats are guaranteed to finish with their fourth straight winning season. They wrapped up their regular season at 13-7 overall and 6-3 in Eastern Missouri Conference play after losing 8-6 to Wright City on May 13. They also surpassed last year's win total of 12.
After splitting their first six games, the Wildcats won five games in a row. They extended their winning streak to four games with the victory over Louisiana.
Offense was one of the keys in MCHS’ strong regular season. The Wildcats scored in double figures five times, including 19-run efforts against Mark Twain on April 16 and Louisiana on May 8.
Junior Edwin Garcia is the Wildcats’ leading hitter with a .434 average. He extended his hitting streak to five games with a three-hit effort against Louisiana.
Five other players – juniors Landyn Bender, Chase Queathem and Noah Beck, senior Jacob Hogue and freshman Jackson Benney – are hitting over .300.
The Wildcats also have been getting strong efforts on the mound. Mac Farrar improved to 5-0 with a victory over Louisiana and Noah Beck is 4-1 after pitching a one-hit shutout in the Wildcats’ 9-0 win over Elsberry on May 6.
MCHS is 1-1 against its district opponents. The Wildcats beat New Bloomfield 7-4 on April 10 and lost to North Callaway 7-6 two weeks later.
