The Montgomery County girls basketball team began its 2023-24 season on Friday by having a happy bus ride back from Sullivan High School.

The Wildcats cruised past the Sullivan Eagles 44-21 in the season opener for both teams. It’s the eighth year in a row MCHS won its season opener and the second consecutive year the Wildcats beat Sullivan, which is a Class 4 team.

MCHS is back in action at 6 p.m. on Nov. 27, when it faces Bowling Green in a first-round game at the Montgomery County Invitational Tournament. The Wildcats are the top seed in the eight-team tournament.

A year ago, the Wildcats squeaked past Sullivan 36-34 in their season opener. On Friday, MCHS cruised to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.  The Wildcats led 22-7 at halftime and 33-15 after the third quarter.

Senior Maddy Queathem scored 11 points off the bench, senior Malia Rodgers finished with 10 points, freshmen Reese Hill and Audrey Janes and junior Aliviah Fischer each had six and senior Olivia Shaw scored four before fouling out with 2:36 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Janes scored the first points of the game with 5:50 to go in the first quarter, when she nailed a 3-pointer. She hit another trey in the fourth quarter.

Rayna Claus and Molly Londen each scored six points to lead the Eagles, who were held to just seven field goals in the game.

Queathem and Rodgers are part of a senior class that also includes Olivia Shaw, Madi Polston and Claire Cobb. The seniors, plus Fischer and juniors Miley Rieke and Karla Gonzalez, are back from last year’s team that finished with a 22-7 record and captured an Eastern Missouri Conference title.

Hill and Janes are the only freshmen on the varsity. They helped the Montgomery County Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team finish 11-3 last year.

Also on Friday, the MCHS junior varsity team beat Sullivan 33-15 in a two-quarter contest. Janes and Rieke each had nine to lead the Wildcats.

Editor’s note: A preview of the Montgomery County girls basketball team is scheduled to be published in the Nov. 22 edition of the Standard.
