County adopts tax rate for 2026

Posted

Montgomery County Commissioners voted to adopt the 2026 general revenue tax rate at $0.2331 per $100 of assessed value, the same rate it was the last two years.

A public hearing was held on Aug. 27 at the Montgomery County Courthouse. There were five people in attendance at the meeting, but no comments were made. The measure was passed unanimously.

Also, the tax rates for the Road and Bridge, the Special Road and Bridge and Johnson Grass levies remained unchanged. The rate for Road and Bridge is $0.2619, Special Road and Bridge is $0.30 and Johnson Grass is zero cents.

The Road and Bridge tax comes from three Road and Bridge funds, then it gets dispersed to the other two Special Road districts in Wellsville and Rhineland. Special Road and Bridge is a tax that was added in the 1980s to buy white rock to put on the road and its rate of 30 cents hasn’t changed for years.

The 2026 assessed valuation total is $334,935,341 for general revenue, Road and Bridge and Johnson Grass and $289,986,240 for Special Road and Bridge. Those figures were based on before the Board of Equalization assessment valuations.

Under general revenue, the county pays for the Commission, Sheriff’s Office, Jail, Collector’s Office, Recorder of Deeds, Planning and Zoning, payroll, insurance and utilities. It does not pay for capital improvement and the Assessor’s Office.

The proposed rate for general revenue was $0.2608 with an anticipated revenue of $873,511, but county officials decided not to change it because of the increased sales tax.

“It started trimming lower in the beginning of the year and it stayed lower,” 1st District Commissioner Dave Teeter said. “But now in the last two months, it has jumped dramatically.”

In 2024, the general revenue tax rate dropped to $0.2331 after it was $0.2517 the year before. That rate was unchanged in 2025 after county officials saw a jump in sales tax.

“After the tax hearing the last five months of the year last year, our sales tax trimmed down,” Teeter said. “We could not predict that. The first few months of this year were down compared to last year, which was up in the first few months. That’s why we chose to keep our rate the same last year because our sales tax in the first six or seven months of last year was up. So we decided to keep our tax rate the same.”
