Voters in Montgomery County will have numerous races to consider in the primary election on Aug. 6.
Polls will be open from 6 a.m.-7 p.m. that day at the Wellsville United Methodist Church, Middletown Baptist Church, the Bellflower, Jonesburg and New Florence community buildings, the Big Spring and Rhineland fire houses and the Knights of Columbus Building in Montgomery City.
There are contested races for county assessor and county coroner. Robert Hildebrand, Jeff Porter and Greg Czerniewski are the Republican candidates for assessor, while Jason Luna and Mike Gouveia will battle for the coroner spot.
Porter, who lives in Montgomery City, has a long political career that included 15 years as Montgomery City mayor and four years as state representative of House District 42, which comprises Montgomery County and parts of Warren and St. Charles County. He has been a State Farm Insurance agent in Montgomery City since 1991 and a real estate agent since 2003.
Hildebrand resides in Montgomery County and has over 30 years of construction and real estate appraising experience. Czerniewski has been a Montgomery County resident for 27 years.
Luna has a long career in law enforcement. He has been working at the Montgomery City Police Department for 26 years and became chief last year. He also owns Jay’s Barber Shop, which is located on 620 S. Sturgeon in Montgomery City.
Gouveia is currently employed with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department as a part-time deputy sheriff. He has worked at the sheriff’s department since 2002.
There are uncontested races for 1st District Commissioner (Dave Teeter), 2nd District Commissioner (Doug Lensing), County Clerk (Carole Weeks), Sheriff (Craig Allison), Kaley Reagan (Public Administrator) and Larry Bade (Surveyor).
There is also a contested race for State Representative of the 61st District. Paul Stratman, Brian Tharp and Bruce Sassmann are the candidates. The 61st District serves Montgomery, Osage, Miller and Gasconade counties. Sassmann is the current State Representative.
There is an uncontested race for Circuit Judge of the 12th Circuit, which serves Montgomery, Audrain and Warren counties. Reichard Scheibe is the lone candidate.
Jeff Myers (Republican) and Shaun Sparks (Democrat) are the candidates for the State Representative in the 42nd District. Myers is the current state representative.
