The Second Annual Dutch Oven contest was held on Aug. 20 during the Old Threshers Show at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.

A team named DSJ Ranch placed first in one-pot meal, bread and dessert in the adult division and second in showmanship. Fulton sisters Sandra Briney and Jean Waits made up the team. They are both retired and have been cooking in Dutch ovens for 14 years. They love camping in the outdoors, riding horses and enjoying Western lifestyle.

Hen and Chicks, which is a mother-daughter duo of Julie Bote and Carrie Sanders, finished second in one-pot meal, bread and dessert in the adult division and placed first in showmanship. Bote is a welder and music teacher and won the 2022 Old Threshers Woman of the Year award. Sanders is a registered nurse and a baker. The two have been cooking together for 30 years.

The Bextermillers, made up of a High Hill father-daughter team of Jerry and Beth Bextermiller, came in first in dessert and bread in the youth division. Jerry is in building maintenance and Beth is a student at Montgomery County High School. They have been cooking in Dutch ovens for four years.

The Korman Kids placed first in one-pot meal and second in dessert and bread in the youth division. The team includes a father and three children. Bart, the father, is an engineer. The three children are Wyatt, Grant and Alice, and they’re all in 4-H.

Also, donations from the tasting plates raised $255 for Central Missouri Honor Flight, the four judges received appreciation gifts from Bundy’s Burgers and Ice Cream.
Goodie bags for the four teams were sponsored by the Montgomery County Health Department, Montgomery County Extension, Aaron Schmidt, Missouri Farm Bureau and Uncle Charlie’s Tool Shed.

A special thanks to the Montgomery County Old Threshers Association for the prize money and the location.
