FFA members attend D.C. Leadership Conference

On the morning of June 7, Montgomery County FFA members Izzy Freymuth, Heather Stille, Shea Stille, Hailey Terry, Brianne West and Carie Schroer got on an airplane and headed for Washington D.C.

The Washington Leadership Conference has been around for more than 50 years. During those 50 years, FFA members nationwide have attended and have accumulated personal skills and interests, developed leadership skills and created service plans that will make a difference in their communities.

During this week at the conference, members attended workshops, seminars and small group sessions. Members focused on personal strengths and goals while in leadership training. Members came together to identify the needs in their communities and developed wide-ranging and high-impact community service projects.

”Everyone kept telling us that WLC is what you take out of it, and I firmly believe in that,” said Schroer, who is a senior.

No matter what the mind set FFA members go into WLC, they will come out as stronger leaders and with an amazing living-to-serve plan.

FFA members were able to experience the history of the nation's capital and tour landmarks such as the National Mall, Arlington National Cemetery, the National Cathedral, Library of Congress, Smithsonian Museum and the U.S. Capitol. One memorable part of their trip was that they were able to go to the top of the Washington Monument.

Members spent a great amount of time in leadership conferences and training. Some of the members struggled getting out of bed to be in the conference rooms by 7 a.m. Even with these struggles, the members grew as leaders and made many new friends and came home better able to serve the MCHS FFA chapter and community.

“WLC was a great trip because I was able to network with different kids all across the US that were involved in agriculture in such diverse ways,” said Freymuth, who graduated from MCHS in May.

The members had an unforgettable time in the nation’s capital. They all came home demanding others to “stay to the right WLC.”
Even though they didn’t enjoy some parts of their trip, they all came home saying that they were grateful for the experience.
“They definitely break you down before building you back up,” said West, a senior. “I wanted to go home after the very first day, but ended up loving my experience.”

All in all, the members would recommend WLC for future FFA members.

“WLC is a great opportunity to meet other people who are passionate about agriculture and FFA from all over the country,” said Heather Stille, who graduated in May. “We were able to tour the nation's capital and do some really cool activities, it was a fantastic experience.”
