A year ago, the Montgomery County football team had just three wins.

After cruising past the Louisiana Bulldogs 54-21 on Friday at Jim Blacklock Field, the Wildcats wrapped up their best regular season in 12 years. And they’re hoping to enjoy some success in district play.

MCHS finished its season at 7-2 with the victory over Louisiana. The Wildcats extended their winning streak to six games. They haven’t lost since Week 3 against North Callaway.

MCHS will take a bye week before returning to action on Nov. 7, when it plays in the Class 2, District 2 semifinals against either Hermann or Cuba at Jim Blacklock Field. It will be the first time the Wildcats will host a district game since 2021, when they lost to Centralia in the district quarterfinals.

MCHS is the top seed in the six-team district tournament.  Hermann is the No. 4 seed and Cuba is seeded fifth, and they will square off at 7 p.m.  on Oct. 31 at Hermann.

On Friday,  eight MCHS seniors were honored before the game. They were Chase Queathem, Adrian Combs, Mac Farrar, Wyatt March, Colby Ellis, Cameron Knapp, Rylan Redditt and Ashton Johnson. Combs, March and Ellis each scored a touchdown.

Also, the Wildcats honored the 2005 squad that placed second in the Class 2 state tournament. A total of 14 players from that team attended the reunion, including 2020 Missouri Sports Hall of Fame honoree Eric Czerniewski.

After a 1-2 start, the Wildcats turned in their best regular season record since 2013, when they finished 8-1. They finished 9-2 after losing to South Callaway in district play.

MCHS got off to a flying start against Louisiana, recovering an onsides kick by Redditt and then getting a 41-yard touchdown run by sophomore Jackson Benney with just 55 seconds into the contest to take an 8-0 lead.

The Wildcats extended their lead to 30-14 at halftime after getting a 30-yard touchdown catch by March and a seven-yard touchdown run by junior Lafe McCurdy in the first quarter and a 66-yard touchdown catch by junior Dallas Hans in the second quarter.

Hans scored his second touchdown with 9:27 left in the third quarter after catching a 38-yard pass from Combs. Ellis and Combs also scored touchdowns in the third quarter.

The 54 points marked a season high for the Wildcats. It’s the first time since 2020 that MCHS scored 50 or more points in a game. The Wildcats are averaging nearly 32 points a game, compared to 20 last year.

The Wildcats also improved to 4-1 at home. They also beat South Callaway, Van-Far and Bowling Green.

Louisiana ended its regular season at 2-7. It had touchdowns by Jared Wilkinson, Ben Settles and A.J. Gaschwender.

A print version will be published in the Oct. 29 edition of the Montgomery Standard.
