With the United States’ 250th birthday approaching, Fox and Fern Furnishings is putting together an event that will help Montgomery County residents get into the American spirit.
The Montgomery City store is holding an America 250 celebration from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on June 27 in which residents can stop by to purchase America 250-themed things such as T-shirts and home decor. Cookies and snacks will be offered.
“It’s something to celebrate because I know there’s a lot going on,” Fox and Fern co-owner Ashley Burmeister said. “I know there’s the Route 66 thing going on. There are a lot of things coming up this year to do.”
The event will be part of a busy Saturday at the Montgomery City business district that will also include Bikes, Wings and Warriors — which is hosted by Montgomery City VFW Post 4436 — and International Mud Day at the Montgomery City Public Library.
Fox and Fern is currently selling blue T-shirts and lightweight sweatshirts. Burmeister, who co-owns the store with husband Bryan, said portions of the sales will go towards VFW Post 4436.
“I’m going to try to have as many 250 themed things as I can just to make it a fun celebration and kind of like, ‘Hey, you can stop here and get your essentials if you don’t have it,’” Burmeister said.
Fox and Fern is holding its event a week before the country’s 250th birthday on July 4. Burmeister said she’s looking forward to the United States Semiquincentennial.
“I’m excited about it,” she said. “Hopefully, everyone else is excited about it, too. It will be fun.”
The Burmeisters put a window with a 1776 flag on top of the store’s America’s 250 display.
“We already had the window,” Ashley Burmeister said. “We had a flag out here and it ended up getting stuck on the lighting and something was snagged. I was going to use just that, but we couldn’t find it because I thought, ‘Oh, I’ll just use that and tea stain it.’ So then Bryan ordered me this one and he did a really good job. He got the 1776 (flag).”
Fox and Fern, located at 120 West Second Street, has been open since Nov. 12, 2022. It is known for selling home decor. Burmeister said there will be more items at the store in the future.
“I will offer more upholstery stuff,” she said. “Currently, I offer only cushions, seat covers, chairs and stools. I don’t really do couches or anything. Now that I’m going to this upholstery camp, I will learn how to do more things.”
Burmeister said it is important for all residents to shop locally.
“The more fun things downtown only bring people out,” she said. “More people will spend money downtown. More money will go into downtown.”
Fox and Fern opens from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday.
