After Montgomery City resident and entrepreneur Mike Wilson was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, friends are coming to the rescue to help him beat the disease.
A fundraiser called BBQ and Tunes Under The Neon Noon is scheduled for Sept. 13 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Martinsburg. Dinner, which includes bratwursts and pulled pork, will be served at 6 p.m. There will be live music from Sundown Shot as well as a live auction. All proceeds will go to Wilson and his wife Traci to help with the expenses for cancer treatment.
One of the Wilsons’ friends, Tammy Angel, shares co-organizer duties with Becky Lichtenberg. Her daughter plays softball with the Wilsons’ granddaughter at Community R-6.
“We just built a close relationship with Mike and Tracy,” said Angel, who lives in Laddonia. “The kids did as well.”
Mike Wilson was the owner of Okie Doke BBQ and Catering, which has a store front in Martinsburg and does catering in Montgomery County. The business was permanently closed in June and the building was up for sale.
“Everything had to be shut down because of his health,” Angel said. “So we’re doing a fundraiser to try to fill in those gaps for them because they always did that kind of stuff for us.”
The fundraiser event is named after a song – Neon Moon – by Brooks and Dunn. It is the Wilsons’ favorite song.
Sundown Shot is based outside of Middletown. It performed at the Old Settlers Picnic and Middletown Reunion this year.
“One of the singers and one of the guitarists is their grandson, Ian Johnson,” Angel said. “Ian is one of the founding members of Sundown Shot. I went to one of the other band members and said, ‘Hey, if we do this, will you guys kind of play a gig for free for Mike.’ They were all on board.”
To purchase tickets, call Angel at 573-253-4929 or Lichtenberg at 573-721-1934. Tickets are $25 per person.
