Groeber, Hoffman named new R-II student board members

Alexa Groeber and Bryson Hoffman had reason to be thrilled during their first week as seniors at Montgomery County High School in August.

They were selected as the student representatives of R-II Student District board, giving them an opportunity to share news about their school once a month. They are part of a board that includes president Maria Stille, vice-president Karl Finke, secretary Karl Queathem, treasurer Kali Salazar and members John Woods, Kasey Pottebaum and Micah Hans.

“It’s an honor because there are so many boys and girls in our grade,” Hoffman said. “We got picked, so it’s pretty special. It can be stressful at times because you have to balance this, schoolwork and sports. It’s definitely cool.”

Groeber and Hoffman made their debut as student representatives during a board meeting on Sept. 14. They discussed information on groups such as FBLA and Student Council.

“I think both of us were really nervous, but everyone was really welcoming,” Groeber said. “That was really great to feel that support. They enjoyed our report and it was fun to be able to show everything that our school does that they don’t always get to see.”

Groeber and Hoffman went to their second board meeting on Oct. 12 at MCHS. Board meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month. The next board meeting will be on Nov. 9.

Groeber said she and Hoffman have made a plan to keep the board members informed about their school in every board meeting.

“I want them to be able to see more things that we do that they don’t always see,” Groeber said. “We’re telling them what all of these high schools are talking about. Right now, our STUCO Takeover events and Cheer Block have been really active. Those are small things that they are not seeing.”

Groeber is a member of the yearbook, FFA, FCCLA, FBLA and A+ groups. She said she is going to be sad not being a student at MCHS anymore after she graduates in May.

“I’m going to miss my teachers and the administrators because they really taught me how to grow up as an adult and how I should act,” Groeber said.

Hoffman plays football and baseball and is on the FBLA, National Honor Society, Student Council and A+ organizations. He said his goal is to simply enjoy the next seven months of his senior year.

“I’m thinking in the back of my head that I’m probably going to miss this place, so I need to enjoy it as much as I can,” Hoffman said. “People say you spend the happiest years of your life in high school, so I’ll try to take them all in at the same time.”
