Guzy, Scott are W-M homecoming king, queen

When they were kindergarten students at Wellsville-Middletown Elementary School, Mason Guzy and Molly Scott marched through the school’s gymnasium as crown bearers during the W-M Homecoming coronation.

On Feb. 3, Guzy and Scott marched through the school’s gymnasium again, this time as the Homecoming king and queen.

The W-M seniors earned their honors during the coronation that happened after the school’s boys and girls basketball games against Louisiana. Guzy and Scott were part of a court that included juniors Jenelle Boeckelman and Nick Smith, sophomores Hunter Bickell and Aubrey Caldwell and freshmen Isaac Todd and Kylie Allison.

“It’s quite a coincidence that it happened again,” Guzy said. “I’m glad it did happen. It made a great picture afterwards.”

Scott received her crown from retiring queen Bethany Slovensky, who is a junior.

“This means so much to me,” Scott said. “Honestly, it’s kind of been a little dream of mine ever since I was a little girl.”

Guzy said he was happy to be named homecoming king in his senior year.

“It means a lot,” Guzy said. “I saw all of my friends get it through the years. It’s something I always wanted for myself and I’m really glad that I got it.”

Scott said she enjoyed a homecoming week that allowed students to dress up 1980s style.

“That was a lot of fun to spend time with your classmates,” Scott said. “I really felt like we all came together in one big group and we all had fun together.”

Guzy plays baseball for the Tigers. In his sophomore year, he helped the team win a district championship. He will continue his baseball career at Hannibal-LaGrange University next year.

“Honestly, I like being here, but I’m excited to get into the next chapter of my life and get into my new academic and athletic situation,” Guzy said. “It’s something I’m really looking forward to, but I’m going to miss being at Wellsville, that’s for sure.”

Scott, who plans to attend either Hannibal-LaGrange or Southwest Baptist University next year, competes in cross country and track and is involved in activities such as FFA, National Honors Society and Honors Choir. When she was a sophomore, she was a member of a 3,200-meter relay team that qualified for the state meet.

“I’m going to miss (the school) a lot,” Scott said. “There are some things I don’t think I’ll miss, but I’m going to miss my teachers and my classmates, at least most of them. I’m going to miss how high school is, with the relationships you build and the activities you get to do. It’s an awesome experience. It’s so crazy that it’s about to come to an end in less of a semester.”

Brock Nelson and Tania Ervin were this year’s crown bearers.
