Jessica Davis replaces retired Keith Reynolds as new fire chief

For almost 30 years, Keith Reynolds was a valuable member for the Montgomery Fire Protection District, working as a captain, assistant fire chief and chief.

On Jan. 27, Reynolds’ long run at the district officially came to an end during an installation ceremony at the Montgomery Fire Protection District building. He plans to retire after 28 years, 15 of them as a fire chief.

“It’s been an interesting ride for 15 years,” Reynolds said. “I said some of the staff here can say that younger in my career, I like to scream and yell a lot. As I got older, I got a little more mellow. I want to thank each and every one of the staff, board members past and present, for the hard work they put in and for believing in me in leading this department.”

Jessica Davis, who has been a member of the district since she was a student at Montgomery County High School in 2000, will take over chief duties. She was handed the chief hat by Reynolds.

“I think you all can see that you have a good leader following me,” Reynolds said. “Just remember each and every day what we’re here for. We’re here to serve what God made us and that’s what God intended for us to serve the public.”

Also, Cody Fortmann was named assistant fire chief, Jeff Zerr was named deputy chief and Neal Davis was named captain. They joined an officer staff that also included captain and chaplain Jim Cline and lieutenants Johnnie Powell and Jim Davis.

“We would really like to thank all of the members of this department for their hard work and devotion,” Jessica Davis said. “It makes leading you truly a pleasure. Keith and I have been truly blessed by all of you and your hard work.”

Reynolds, who lived in Montgomery County all of his life, joined the district in 1996. He said he decided to retire from the district since he has devoted so much time trying to get a degree in paramedicine.

“I felt like the department may suffer because of that, so I was like, ‘It was time to let somebody have more time and dedication, too,’” Reynolds said.

Reynolds became chief in 2009. Davis said Reynolds provided strong leadership during his tenure as chief.

“When he took over, it was a little rocky here,” the new fire chief said. “We put a lot of work into building relationships into this beautiful atmosphere we have now. If we need something, people will show up. That didn’t always happen in the past.”

Reynolds said he and Davis talked for over a year about Davis taking over the fire department.

“Jess has been an assistant to me for many years,” Reynolds said. “We’ve been working towards her taking command on some of the calls. I think she’s ready. I’m glad to see where the department can go with her leadership.”

Davis, who also works as an art teacher at Montgomery County R-II School District, said Reynolds has been helpful to her throughout her career with the district.

“A thanks to Keith for supporting me the last several years and making sure I’ve got the training and leadership and education I needed to be able to fill your steps,” Davis said. “Hopefully, we can keep that tradition going and keep that education going for upcoming staff.”
