For the last two years, sand volleyball has been popular in Jonesburg as co-ed volleyball matches have been played at Lions Park every Friday night.

Now, sand volleyball is coming to the Jonesburg Homecoming. There will be a sand volleyball tournament on the final day of the three-day fair, which is Saturday.

Lucas Folta, a 2013 Warrenton graduate who lives in the Warren County portion of Jonesburg, came up with the idea of adding the tournament to the Jonesburg fair, which will be in its 83rd year.

“It’s something new,” Folta said. “It’s something different. It gets more people out there.”

The Jonesburg Homecoming starts on Thursday that will include a parade at 6:30 p.m., a queen contest talent competition at 7:30 p.m. The next day, there will be a pedal tractor pull at 6 p.m., the egg toss at 6:30 p.m., and a washer tournament and a chainsaw contest at 7 p.m. Besides the volleyball tournament, a baby show (11 a.m.), car show (2 p.m.) and a queen and princess contest (5 p.m.) are also scheduled for Saturday. Music will be played by Shoot for the Stars, Alex Day and Mickey Scott throughout the three-day fair.

Registration for the volleyball tournament will start at 10 a.m. and matches will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday. The fee is $10 per team member and co-ed teams must have a minimum of six people per team, including two females. There will be a 100 percent payout split between the first, second and third-place teams. Anyone who wants to register must contact Folta at 636-359-7434.

Folta said as of June 5, five teams have signed up and the tournament is limited to 10 teams.

Folta is one of numerous people who compete in the Jonesburg Co-Ed Sand Volleyball League, which is in its second year. The league, which began in April 2023, wrapped up its spring season on June 8 with a six-team tournament.

“I’ve always been interested in volleyball,” Folta said. “The high school I went to never had a men’s volleyball team. I always wanted to play and join a league. I played at Sugarfire and other outside sand volleyball leagues that have been around.”

Volleyball matches are played at a sand volleyball court at Lions Park. The league is run by Juan Raygoza.

“That’s been there for a long time,” Folta said. “It had just never been utilized in years until we started doing co-ed volleyball every Friday night two years ago.”
