Middletown receives new flow tank, approves duckweed chemicals

The City of Middletown recently received a new flow tank it ordered in March for its chlorine injection system.

The city had to purchase a new flow tank since its old one was deteriorating. City Clerk Pam Shaw ordered the flow tank and pump on March 10, but found out on April 2 – the same day of the Middletown Board of Aldermen meeting – that they weren’t delivered. She had the tank and pump shipped to her house.

“I talked to this guy named Josh and it was all ordered,” Shaw said. “Not the tank, but the pump was on back order. They were going to ship it out together, but he didn’t think it would be too long. I didn’t get an email or anything, so I thought I would better check on that because they needed me to fill out the application. I don’t think our credit card would go over $500 without going through the bank and all of that. I sent them our tax exempt, so I thought it was all ordered. Well, I went (online) and they said you have two items in your cart.”

Also, city officials approved the purchase of duckweed chemicals. The city plans to purchase sonar pellets, but it would need to buy a granule spreader at the cost of $49.99 which can only spread four pounds at a time.

“The way the duckweed is growing, it is probably a good idea if we go ahead and spray it with the sonar,” Middletown Mayor Gary Moore said. “I thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea to back it up down the road in a few months with pellets.”

The City of Middletown has been tested for PFAS, which stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. City officials were notified that the first round of testing has been done and there won’t be another test until January 2027 since the first round didn’t show any detects. If there are no detects in the second round of testing, sampling will need to be done for only every three years.
