The Montgomery County Assessor’s Office is reminding residents who haven’t filed their personal property assessments to do so as soon as possible.
The deadline to turn in the personal property assessment list was March 1, but penalties will be applied if they are turned in after May 1. Personal property includes all motor vehicles, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, trailers, boats, motors, mobile homes, aircraft, farm machinery, livestock and grain.
“We sent the second notice out to remind people to turn in their assessment sheets on their personal property,” Assessor Jeff Porter said.
Personal property assessments must be filed with the assessor every year. Porter said his office sent a large number of assessment sheets in the beginning of the year.
“I think we had over 7,000 assessment sheets that we sent out initially,” Porter said. “We sent roughly 2,200 out that needed to be answered. We’re getting people coming in, talking to us and getting all of that stuff kind of squared up.”
Residents who want to file in person can do so at the Assessor’s Office at 310 Salisbury Street in Montgomery City. The office is open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The assessment list can also be mailed to the Assessor’s Office.
“We’re not able to do online yet,” Porter said. “I’m in transition to try to get that ability for next year, hopefully.”
