Montgomery County gets ready for fair

For anyone who enjoys live music and wrestling, the Montgomery County Fair is the place to be in July.

The 77th annual fair, which starts on July 15, will have several new events, including a live music fest that will feature Mac Watts, Kayley Green and Kaleb Austin, ACW Championship Wrestling and karaoke. The live music fest is scheduled for 7 p.m. on July 20 and wrestling will start at 7 p.m. on July 18.

Those big events influenced the Montgomery County Junior Fair Board to come up with the slogan of this year’s fair, “Where Small-Town Charm Meets Big-Time Fun.”

“We kind of let them brainstorm (on slogans) throughout the meeting,” said Chasity Lichtenberg, secretary of the Fair Board. “They do a lot of Googling to see what other fairs have done in the past and events. They came up with a theme the last couple of years.”

The Junior Fair Board, which started in 2022, has 25 members – five of them are attending college – and has an officer team that includes Macy Bader, Elizabeth Mueller, Kadyn Schmidt, Gracie Cobb, Machaela Wehrle, Malerie Schutt and Derrick Cobb.

“They’re dedicated,” Lichtenberg said. “They’re not there just for points. They’re there because they thoroughly enjoyed the fair.”

With the fair a month away, fair guides are already out to the public. Lichtenberg and Cora Johnson – a Junior Fair Board member – created the 104-page guide that will help fairgoers see information on all of the events of this year’s fair. Lichtenberg and Johnson started on it during the fall season and it took them five months to finish it.

“We completely redid the fair book, which is why it looks totally different,” Lichtenberg said. “Cora and I got together and we did every single page completely redone.”

The fair begins on July 15 with the Little Mr. and Miss Contest, Fair Queen Pageant and Open Horse Show. Johnson was the Fair Queen last year.

The parade is scheduled for July 16, the junior livestock auction will be on July 18 and the truck and tractor pull, laser tag and a karaoke event will be on July 19.

American Championship Wrestling is an organization that is based out in Troy and got started in 2017. The American Championship Wrestling event on July 18 at the Grandstands will include an appearance from WWE Hall of Famer “Cowboy” Bob Orton, Jr.. He will be available for autographs and photos.

On July 20, Watts will open the live music fest at 7 p.m., followed by Green at 8:30 p.m. and Austin at 9:30 p.m. Watts is from Nashville, Tenn., Green is from Florence, S.C., and Austin is from Utah. Green recently signed a record deal with Sony Music Nashville and released a single called “Live Fast Die Pretty.”

“We’re giving music a go,” Lichtenberg said. “It’s a huge change to bring music back.”

Also, the fair is having a karaoke event at 6 p.m. on July 19 at the Family Fun Center.
