Montgomery County Sheriff's report

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of scammers spoofing our phone number and falsely claiming to be federal agents or law enforcement officers. Phone number spoofing is when a scammer makes it look like they are calling from a real phone number - like a police department, bank or government office. The caller may tell you that you have a federal warrant for your arrest and demand money to avoid being taken into custody.

These scammers often instruct victims to: Withdraw cash from their bank account, send money through a kiosk or other electronic transfer method, stay on the phone the entire time, do not tell anyone about the situation. Please remember, law enforcement will NEVER handle warrants or legal matters by demanding payment over the phone. Law enforcement will NEVER ask you to withdraw cash or send money through a kiosk, gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire transfer services. Legitimate officers will NEVER tell you to keep the call secret or prevent you from speaking with family, friends or an attorney.

If you receive one of these calls: Hang up immediately, do not provide personal or banking information, do not send money, contact your local law enforcement agency directly using a trusted phone number.

On May 24, deputies responded to a residence in the Jonesburg area for a report of a dog locked inside a vehicle. Upon arrival deputies observed the dog inside the vehicle appearing to be in distress due to the temperature inside the vehicle. During the investigation deputies located the vehicle owner, who stated the dog belonged to her boyfriend. She was arrested, transported to the MC Jail and charged with animal neglect. The dog was turned over to animal control until it can be claimed by the owner.

On May 25, deputies responded to a business in Danville for a reported assault involving a disorderly subject who was threatening customers and refusing to leave the property. According to reports the suspect became increasingly aggressive, threatened to kill one individual and cut off his fingers while armed with a pair of hedge trimmers and directed profanities toward others who attempted to intervene. When another individual stepped in to assist, the suspect allegedly threw the hedge trimmers, striking the victim in the stomach. The suspect then threw a crowbar, which struck the victim in the arm and caused a laceration. Witnesses on scene provided statements corroborating the assault and deputies recovered both the hedge trimmers and crowbar as evidence. The suspect was located a short distance away, taken into custody without incident and transported to the MC Jail. Further information obtained was that the suspect was currently under the supervision of probation and parole for assault on a special victim and a records check revealed the suspect has an extensive history of violent offenses, including multiple convictions for assault 2nd degree, assault 3rd degree, domestic assault and assaults involving special victims. The suspect is currently being held in the Montgomery County Jail, on a No Bond Warrant, for the following charges: 2 counts of armed criminal action, assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

On May 27, deputies conducted a traffic stop in the Jonesburg area for a moving violation. During the investigation deputies discovered the driver did not have a valid driver’s license, the vehicle was not registered and the vehicle did not have insurance. The driver also threatened deputies during the stop. Deputies attempted to place the driver under arrest, at which time he pulled away from deputies and attempted to flee. The subject was subdued and taken into custody. He was transported to the MC Jail and charged with harassment, resisting arrest, failure to register a motor vehicle, failure to signal, operating a utility vehicle under the influence of alcohol and failure to maintain financial responsibility. During the incident, the subject’s girlfriend approached the traffic stop, began interfering with deputies and refused commands to stop. She was subsequently arrested, transported to the MC Jail and charged with interfering with a first responder.
