The Montgomery County cross country team will look to turn in another strong season in both boys and girls divisions this fall as it returns four state qualifiers from 2020.
Senior Dawson McCown, juniors Lyric Ford and Destiny Shaw and sophomore Malia Rodgers are the returning state qualifiers for the Wildcats, who start their season on Sept. 5 at the New Haven Classic. Rodgers and Ford earned all-state medals last year, placing 13th and 23rd, respectively, in the Class 3 girls state meet.
Ford, Rodgers and Shaw will lead a girls team that also includes junior Carie Schroer and sophomores Olivia Shaw and Claire Cobb. Last year, Schroer competed in six meets and wrapped up her sophomore season with a career-best time of 23 minutes, 53 seconds at the Class 3 district meet in Bowling Green. Cobb and Olivia Shaw each ran one meet in 2020.
Destiny Shaw said she’s thrilled that her team has six returning runners from a year ago.
“It brings a lot of confidence,” the junior said. “I think we’re a lot better than we were last year.”
Ford and Rodgers earned medals in all eight meets they competed in last fall. Ford, the school’s record holder with a 19:24.76, won four meets, including the New Haven Classic. Rodgers won one meet, which was the Orchard Farm Invitational.
Last year, the girls team placed second in four meets, fourth in the New Haven and District 3 meets and seventh in the Linn Invitational.
McCown was the Wildcats’ top runner in 2020, winning the Eastern Missouri Conference championship for the second year in a row, placing second in four meets and competing at state for the second consecutive year. He ran a school-record time 16:37 in his second-place finish at the Orchard Farm Invitational.
This year, McCown is the only senior of a boys team that has two juniors, three freshmen and one sophomore.
“I’m a little anxious and nervous, but I’m excited to see how it goes,” McCown said. “We have a young team.”
Junior Logan Camp is another returning runner for the boys team. Last year, he earned medals in the junior varsity division at the New Haven and Linn meets.
Junior Mikah Schneider, sophomore Jacer Brower and freshmen Jadrian Thurman, Brendan Craven and Beckham Cothren round out the boys squad.
