R-II board approves tax rate

Posted

There is no change in this year’s Montgomery County R-II School District’s tax rate, which was announced during a public hearing on Aug. 27 at Montgomery County Middle School.

The district’s tax rate is $3.9745 per $100 of assessed valuation, which is the same as last year’s. The tax rate is set to produce the revenues from the property tax required by the budget for the fiscal year starting on July 1. There were no comments at the hearing and the measure was approved unanimously by the board members.

“Overall, I was just happy with the outcome that we keep the same (tax rate) under $4 and we will still be able to generate a good chunk of additional revenue this year without us having to increase our rate and impact the citizens that way,” R-II Superintendent Dave Samuel said.

The district’s assessed valuation is $216,984,464, a 9.64 percent increase from last year. The new construction and improvements total is $5,553,117, a 13 percent jump from 2025.

The district’s property tax rate for incidental funds is $3.226 per $100 of assessed valuation, which will generate $7,000,221 in revenue. The tax rate for debt service funds is $0.7479, which will generate $1,622,827 in revenue.

“What I did was I took a penny so the total rates stayed the same,” Samuel said. “I took a penny from the debt services and basically moved it to incidental. That way, it’s the same money.”

Samuel brought a list of tax rates from 12 neighboring school districts at the hearing. R-II’s tax rate is the third lowest out of the 12 districts. South Callaway’s rate of $2.75 is the lowest and Bowling Green has the second lowest at $3.9496. Pike County R-III, which includes Clopton High School, is the highest at $5.0017.

“If you look at it, our rate is lower compared to most,” Samuel said. “It’s going to stay the same as it was last year. With the increase of assessed valuations, it will generate more money for us.”
