Ronald Frederick “Ron” Knigge, 84, of Wellsville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Mercy Hospital in Washington.
Ron was born on August 24, 1942, in St. Louis to Frederick Elliot Knigge and Ella Melvina (Walker) Knigge.
After graduating from Central Methodist University with his bachelor’s degree, Ron began his professional career with The Young Group Ltd. in 1965 as a Sales Engineer for the St. Louis Roofing Division. While working for the company, Ron was drafted into the United States Army, where he proudly served for three years, including two years stationed in Walsrode, Germany. During his military service, he served as supply sergeant for a 25-man nuclear missile detachment. In that role, he was entrusted with the inventory of the warheads and oversaw the supply needs of the detachment.
Following his military service, Ron returned to The Young Group Ltd., where he continued what would become a distinguished 42-year professional career with the company. In 1970, he was promoted to Division Manager of the Louisville Roofing and Sheet Metal Division, a position he held until 1992, when he was promoted to executive vice president of the corporation. As executive vice president, he was responsible for the overall management of six roofing divisions. The Young Group consisted of 16 operating divisions throughout the country, representing multiple specialty construction trades.
Ron’s dedication to his alma mater, Central Methodist University, was recognized throughout his life. In 2003, he received the College Service Award, and in 2016, he was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award, both from Central Methodist University.
Throughout his career, Ron was deeply involved in the roofing and construction industries and served as Past President of the Kentucky Roofing Contractors Association and Past President of the Louisville Builders Exchange. He was respected for his leadership, dedication and commitment to the organizations and people with whom he worked.
Ron was also a devoted Freemason and maintained numerous Masonic affiliations throughout his life. He was a member of Montgomery Lodge #246 AF&AM; Scottish Rite Valley of St. Louis, 32nd Degree; Moolah Shrine Temple in St. Louis, where he served as an Ambassador; Triune Chapter #93 Royal Arch Masons; Centralia Council #34 Cryptic Masons; St. Graal Commandery #12 Knights Templar; MID-MO Shrine Club; and Little Dixie Shrine Club.
Ron’s life was marked by service, leadership, dedication and a strong commitment to the organizations and communities that were important to him. From his service in the United States Army to his distinguished career, his support of Central Methodist University and his many years of Masonic service, he leaves behind a lasting legacy of accomplishment and devotion to others.
He will be remembered with respect, gratitude and affection by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Ron is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Sonja Knigge, of Louisville, Ky.; children, William Frederick Knigge, Ronald Scott Knigge and Sharron Elizabeth (Scott) Johns, all of Charlestown, Ind.; stepson, Glenn (Barbie) Grooms of Louisville, Ky.; grandchildren, William, Michael, Madeline, Grace and Drew Knigge, and Ally Jo and Abby Johns; niece, Hanna Knigge; and nephew, Jacob Knigge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Ella Knigge, and his brother, Joseph Knigge.
Visitation was held on Sept. 11 at Bethel Church in Wellsville. Masonic and funeral services were held at the church the following day. Pastor Brian Mabry officiated the services. An interment with full military honors was held at Bethel Cemetery.
