Seniors bring spark to Montgomery County track team

Posted

The Montgomery County track team had a large and outstanding senior class this spring.

The Wildcats had nine seniors, three of them competed with the program all four years. Ashton Johnson, Cameron Knapp, Katyln Kolling, Kendrick Lewis, Riley Reid, Weston See, Cooper Sellenriek, Georgia Shahan and Jacob Teson made up the senior class.

Two of them wrapped up their high school track careers at the Class 3, Sectional 2 championship meet on May 16 in Centralia. Sellenriek placed sixth in the javelin and eighth in the 400 and Kolling was a member of a girls 1,600-meter relay team that came in seventh. There were no seniors who qualified for the Class 3 state meet.

Sellenriek competed with the Wildcats all four years. He competed in 11 different events this season, but the javelin was his strongest event as he had six top-10 finishes, including a first-place finish at the Crystal Branch Invitational at Southern Boone High School in early April. Sellenriek threw a personal-best 153-7.25 in his third-place finish at the District 4 meet on May 9 in Centralia that qualified him to sectionals for the first time.

Kolling also made her first sectional meet appearance this season. She competed in the 4x400 eight times and helped the relay team pick up two wins. She participated in seven different events throughout the spring.

Kolling was part of an Eastern Missouri Conference championship team in four years with the team. She helped the Wildcats win their seventh straight EMO crown on May 1. At the conference meet, she finished eighth with a personal-best time of 1:05.36 in the 400.

Lewis was the Wildcats’ top performer in the hurdle and jumping events. He had first-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles in the Crystal Branch Invitational and a victory in the high jump in a personal-best 6-0.75 at the Centralia Invitational.

Lewis’ high school track career ended at the district meet, where he competed with a 4x400 team that came up one place short of qualifying for sectionals, finishing fifth.

Johnson was the Wildcats’ top performer in the throwing events. He got a victory in the discus in the Crystal Branch Invitational, earned a third-place medal in the discus with a personal-best 128-8.75 and had five top-four finishes in the shot put. Johnson joined the track team in his junior year.

Reid also competed with the track team for two years. She competed in the 300-meter hurdles in nine meets and ran a personal-best time of 59.09 seconds at the conference meet, which was held at Jim Blacklock Field.

Shahan, Knapp and See competed in track for the first time and participated in the throwing events. Teson was also in his first year in track and competed in the sprint events.

All nine seniors were recognized with their parents during the Montgomery County Middle School Invitational on May 4. Four of them – Lewis, Sellenriek, Kolling and See – will be attending the University of Missouri-Columbia next year.
