Seniors make mark for softball Tigers

Posted

Three years ago, softball came back to Wellsville-Middletown High School after a one-year hiatus.

No one was more thrilled than Jenna Collins, Legend Davis and Aubrey Harmon, who were then sophomores in the 2024 season. They didn’t get a chance to play softball for the Tigers when they were freshmen since the team had to cancel its season because it didn’t have a full roster.

“I wanted to play in my freshman year, but nobody else came to the practice but me and (2024 W-M graduate) Meagan (Cripe),” Harmon said.

Collins, Davis and Harmon joined a W-M team that had 16 players and had a new coach in Alex Thull. Even though the Tigers didn’t get any victories, the trio enjoyed playing softball at the high school level for the first time.

“I felt like it was one big family even though before the softball season started,” Collins said. “We were all known to each other. But I felt like it brought us together really well.”

Now, time is running out for Collins, Davis and Harmon in their high school softball careers at W-M. The Tigers have four regular season games remaining before they start district tournament play.

“It’s bittersweet,” Davis said. “I’m excited to go off and do bigger things, but it’s sad leaving my small town behind.”

Collins, Davis and Harmon were recognized after the Tigers’ senior night game against Pilot Grove on Sept. 21 at Kiwanis Ballpark in Wellsville. Each of the seniors swung at a pitch that was thrown by Thull. Then, they circled the bases with their parents.

“I think our senior night was very fun,” Collins said. “I’m very glad that we decided to do it this way. It’s very nice being recognized because this team has been a big part of my life for the past three years and I love every single one of them. Our coaches (Alex and Katlyn Thull) are great coaches. It’s going to be sad leaving the team.”

The Tigers played at Kiwanis Ballpark for the first time this season. The game was moved from its home field at the high school since the W-M Cross Country Invitational was held at the W-M campus.

“They really redone the field and made it better, in my opinion,” said Davis, who plays second base.

Harmon said she was happy that she got to play her senior night game at Kiwanis Ballpark. She was the team’s pitcher.

“I like playing on this field simply because this is where I played T-ball,” Harmon said.

Just a week before, the seniors helped their team pick up its first and only win of the season. W-M defeated Marion County 26-9 on the road on Sept. 14 after losing its first six games of the year.

“I felt like it was a good win for us,” said Collins, who plays center field. “We were all very happy. We played great. We played as a family. We played as a team. We played as friends. We all worked really well together for that game. I was very happy to see all of us work that well together.”

Harmon, Collins and Davis lead a W-M team that has four juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen. Harmon said she has high hopes for her team as its season comes down to its final weeks.

“I think we can shock a few teams, honestly,” Harmon said. “We aren’t as bad as a team as a lot of teams assume that we are although our record isn’t really showing it. But when we do come together, we have some really good games.”

Next year, Harmon plans to attend Hannibal-LaGrange University, Collins will go to William Woods University and Davis will join the Marine Corps.
