On July 24, deputies responded to a residence in Wellsville regarding a reported scam. The victim advised that he received a phone call from an individual claiming to be a representative of the federal government. The caller falsely stated that the victim’s identity had been stolen and instructed him to withdraw all of his money from the bank and purchase gift cards to protect his funds. Believing the caller was legitimate, the victim followed the instructions and purchased gift cards. He provided the scammer with the information from two of the cards before his bank detected suspicious activity, flagged the account and contacted him, preventing any further loss.
Reminder: Law enforcement agencies and government entities will never ask you to withdraw money, purchase gift cards or provide gift card numbers or PINs to resolve a legal matter or protect your finances. If you receive a call like this: Hang up immediately, Do not provide personal or financial information, Never purchase gift cards at the direction of a caller. Please share this information with family and friends, especially older adults, as these scams continue to target vulnerable individuals throughout our communities.
Also on July 24, deputies responded to a residence in Wellsville for a domestic disturbance. During the investigation, deputies determined that an argument had escalated and both parties became physically involved. Deputies were able to de-escalate the situation and neither party wished to pursue charges. The individuals agreed to separate for the remainder of the evening, and deputies cleared the scene without further incident.
On July 25, while deputies were patrolling the Montgomery County Fair, they witnessed a man and woman engaged in an argument. During the altercation the male subject punched the female in the face, placed her in a headlock and then pushed her away. Deputies immediately intervened and took the male subject into custody. He was transported to the MC Jail and charged with domestic assault.
On July 27, deputies responded to a residence in the New Florence area for a report of trespassing. Upon arrival deputies located a suspect who had previously been trespassed from the property on July 23, 2026. The suspect claimed she was only there to retrieve some personal belongings; however, deputies learned she had arrived the previous evening and had refused requests to leave the property. The suspect was arrested, transported to the MC Jail and charged with trespassing.
Also on July 27, deputies responded to Fastlane in Jonesburg for a report of an assault. The victim reported that a male subject had punched him in the shoulder before leaving the scene in a vehicle. Deputies attempted to locate the suspect but were unable to locate him at that time. The incident remains under investigation and deputies are continuing their efforts to locate the suspect.
On July 29, deputies learned that a stolen vehicle from the Kansas City area was traveling into Montgomery County. Deputies located the vehicle on Interstate 70 and conducted a traffic stop. During the investigation, deputies confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen and discovered the driver’s driving privileges were revoked. The driver was arrested, transported to the MC Jail and charged with tampering with a motor vehicle and driving while revoked.
