For many years, wins were hard to come by for the Wellsville-Middletown girls basketball team. The Tigers finished with 11 consecutive seasons with single-digit victories from 2010-2011. They finished 0-25 in the 2011-12 campaign.
Now, the program is enjoying three straight seasons with double-digit wins. After losing to Jamestown in a Class 1, District 9 quarterfinal game in Jefferson City on Feb. 19, W-M finished its season at 13-13, making it the first time since 2010 the Tigers recorded a .500 season.
W-M has won 40 games in the last three seasons. A year ago, the Tigers finished with a 16-11 mark, their first winning season under Todd Cripe, who took over the program in 2019. They won 11 games in 2022, their first season with double-digit victories since 2010.
The Tigers started their 2023-24 season on a high note, beating Community R-6 41-34 on Nov. 21 at home, making it the first time since 2009 W-M defeated the Trojans. The Tigers also avenged the loss to Community in the district finals the previous winter.
W-M won the Keytesville Tournament title for the second year in a row, beating Higbee 65-58 in overtime in the championship game on Jan. 27. The Tigers were 9-6 at that point before hitting a slump, losing seven of their next 11 games, including a 51-41 overtime loss to Bowling Green on Feb. 9 at home in which the Tigers led by 11 points at halftime.
W-M also had a pair of fourth-place finishes at the Montgomery County and New Franklin tournaments.
The Tigers will lose three players to graduation – seniors Bethany Slovensky, Jenelle Boeckelman and Meagan Cripe. They played with the program all four years. Slovensky earned all-Eastern Missouri Conference honors in all of those years.
Keigan Hall, Indica Scott and Hallie Guzy make up the junior class. Hall earned all-tournament honors at the Montgomery County tournament for the second straight year after scoring 31 points in three games in the 2023 tournament.
Sophomore Helenea McKenzie and freshmen Elly Cash and Aubrey Harmon round out the team.
The Tigers had wins over Silex, Fulton, Sturgeon, Mark Twain, Van-Far, Marion County, Wright City, Madison, Livingston County, Pilot Grove and Liberty Christian.
Jamestown ended W-M hopes of going to the district finals for the second year in a row with the win over the Tigers at districts. W-M was the No. 4 seed in the tournament.
