Jefferson City was good to the Wellsville-Middletown track team on May 23-24.
That’s when the Tigers ended their 2025 season on a high note, getting three all-state medalists and breaking school records in three events.
Sophomore Elly Cash and seniors Gage Marshall and Cooper Henderson made a trip to the awards podium for W-M at the Class 1 state meet at Adkins Stadium. Cash placed fourth in the 100 and sixth, Henderson came in sixth in the 110-meter hurdles and Marshall finished sixth in the high jump. It’s the fifth year in row the Tigers had at least one all-state medalist.
"It’s nice that we have some kids from a small school to get some medals,” Henderson said.
Also at state, Cash broke her own school records in the 100 and 200 and the 400-meter relay team of Henderson, Marshall, senior Jonah Slovensky and sophomore Shane Joles set a school mark despite not qualifying out of preliminaries.
The performances at state put an end to another outstanding season for the Tigers that included 19 first-place finishes. W-M had a season-high five first-place finishes in the North Callaway and Van-Far meets.
W-M will lose six athletes to graduation – Henderson, Marshall, Slovensky, Justin Beabout, Della Gosseen and Julia Dias.
In addition to his all-state medal in the 110-meter hurdles, Henderson had four first-place finishes, three of them came in the 110-meter hurdles. He also qualified for state in the 300-meter hurdles.
Marshall placed at state in the high jump for the third year in a row. He had five first-place finishes, including one in the high jump in the Tigers’ season-opening meet on March 24 at Van-Far. He earned all-Eastern Missouri Conference honors in the event, placing second. Marshall also competed in the long jump at state.
Slovensky had four first-place finishes, including two in the hurdle events at the North Callaway Invitational on April 16. Beabout competed in the 4x100 team that won a district title and qualified for state. Gosseen was the Tigers’ top performer in the throwing events. Dias, who was a foreign exchange student from Brazil, earned four medals in the 4x800.
Cash competed at the state meet for the second year in a row. She ran 12.93 seconds in the 100 and 26.98 seconds in the 200.
“I was really not expecting the placings that I got, but I placed a lot higher than I thought I would,” Cash said.
Cash also had four first-place finishes, including two in the district meet, and all-EMO awards in the 100 and 200.
The Tigers had a total of 20 athletes on their team. Other contributing athletes include juniors Brooke Stroup, Gage Tipp, Isaac Todd and Lorelei Smith and sophomores Victoria Jones, Gage Nichols and Aubrey Harmon.
W-M competed in 12 meets this season, including the state meet. Marshall and Cash were the only athletes who placed in every meet.
