Bethany Slovensky had a memorable Homecoming night at Wellsville-Middletown High School on Feb. 11.

First, the sophomore helped the girls basketball team pick up a win. Three hours later, she was voted the school’s Homecoming queen.

“It was my second Homecoming and it was the best,” Slovensky said.

Slovensky was named queen during the coronation at the W-M gymnasium. She beat out senior Abbigail Kleinsorge, junior Kaylee Marshall and freshman Indica Scott for the honor.

“It was really special because I had a lot of support from my friends and family,” Slovensky said.

Senior Darin Clemons was named Homecoming king. The other candidates were junior Gavin Hill, Tristin Hill and freshman Hunter Bickell.

“I feel honored,” Clemons said. “I didn’t expect this, for sure. I thank everyone for voting for me.”

W-M celebrated its 62nd year of Homecoming, which had a Las Vegas-type theme this year. For most of the week, students got to dress up like they were in Las Vegas. The school had its Homecoming dance on Feb. 12 at the Middletown Community Center.

“It was really fun,” Slovensky said. “I really enjoyed the dress up days this year. It was fun for everyone who participated.”
Slovensky helped the W-M girls basketball team knock off Bowling Green 55-49 by scoring 16 points. Then, she immediately prepared for the coronation by putting on her blue dress.

“I still had nerves from my game coming into my coronation,” said Slovensky, who also competes in cross country and track at W-M.

The sophomore said at first, she wasn’t going to be a queen candidate.

“There was someone who was originally supposed to be the Homecoming candidate, but the family moved,” Slovensky said. “So they asked me to step up and I did.”

Slovensky received her crown from junior Libby Kleinsorge, who was voted queen last year.

“Libby and I are really good friends,” Slovensky said. “It made it even more special because she got to do it.”

Then, Clemons found out he was voted Homecoming king.
“That’s really special for him because he’s a senior,” Slovensky said. “Everyone really likes him and he’s just a good guy.”

Clemons said he was surprised when he was nominated as one of the king candidates.

“I was sitting in class,” Clemons said. “They chose me as one of the candidates. I walked into the room and found out I was the candidate.”

Clemons said he enjoyed going to the coronation at a packed gymnasium. It was the first time since his freshman year he went to the event.

“I’m glad the community is coming together,” Clemons said. Clemons, a member of the school’s FFA group, plans to attend WyoTech in Laramie, Wyo., next year. The senior said he decided on that school after visiting there last summer.

“It suited me the best,” Clemons said. “I like the location and it’s a good opportunity to spread my wings.”

Ronan Page and Emerson Parrish were the crown bearers at the coronation.
