The Montgomery County basketball teams didn’t capture any championships in this year’s Montgomery County Basketball Invitational, but both teams received some hardware in this year’s event.
The MCHS boys finished second and the MCHS girls won the consolation championship. The MCHS boys placed runner-up for the eighth time and the MCHS girls captured their first consolation title since 2017.
The Wildcats lost to Mexico 75-44 in the boys championship game at Ballew & Snell Court on Saturday and were denied of winning their second straight title. MCHS, the No. 6 seed, had a Cinderella-like run to the finals, knocking off No. 3 Fatima and No. 2 Fulton in the first two rounds.
In the girls division, MCHS cruised to a 52-31 win over Fulton in the consolation championship game at Montgomery County Middle School on Saturday. The Wildcats, the No. 3 seed, bounced back from an upset loss to No. 6 Hermann to beat No. 7 New Haven and No. 5 Fulton in the consolation side of the bracket.
Senior Adrian Combs and sophomore Jackson Benney were the Wildcats’ representatives on the boys all-tournament team. Sophomore Emma Rodgers represented MCHS on the girls all-tournament team. All three players received their first MCHS all-tournament awards.
The MCHS began their 2025-26 season on Dec. 3 with the first-round win over Fatima, which was a new team to the tournament. The 60-42 win over Fatima marked the seventh straight year the Wildcats won a first-round game.
The next night, the Wildcats beat Fulton 77-66 to advance to the championship game for the third year in a row.
In the finals, MCHS lost to a Mexico team that won all three of its games by an average margin of 29 points.
Combs finished with 50 points in three games. He scored 20 points against Fatima, 21 against Fulton and nine against Mexico.
Benney scored 31 points in three games to join Combs on the all-tournament team, including a team-high 12 against Mexico.
The Wildcats are 2-1 and will be back in action on Tuesday in a road game against Southern Boone.
The MCHS girls lost 46-43 to Hermann in a first-round game on Dec. 3 after leading 42-40 with six minutes left in the fourth quarter. Almost two weeks earlier, they fell to Monroe City 45-42 in their season opener at home.
The Wildcats defeated New Haven 43-25 in the consolation semifinals on Dec. 5. The next day, they finished with their largest offensive output of the season in the win over Fulton.
Rodgers scored 40 points in three games, including a 21-point effort against Hermann, to receive all-tournament honors. She finished as the team’s second-leading scorer.
Junior Aubrey Janes, who earned all-tournament honors, led the Wildcats with 43 points. She scored a game-high 27 points with three 3-pointers against Fulton.
The Wildcats improved to 2-2. Their next game will be on Tuesday against Southern Boone on the road.
