The Montgomery County football team gave its seniors a nice sendoff on Friday.
The Wildcats wrapped up their home season with a 26-6 victory over the North Callaway Thunderbirds, improving to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in Eastern Missouri Conference play with one regular season game to go. MCHS ends its regular season on Oct. 20 with a road game against South Callaway, which improved to 5-3 after beating Mark Twain on Friday.
With the win over North Callaway, the Wildcats clinched their fourth winning season in five years. Last year, they finished 2-8. MCHS also extended its winning streak to three games. The team hasn’t lost since Week 5, when it dropped to Bowling Green.
A total of 13 seniors were recognized before the game against North Callaway. Jacer Brower, Jace Ellis, Landon Massey, Dayton Simmons, Wes Cobb, Weston Marshall, Chase DeJesus, Bryson Hoffman, Mason Leu, Christian Naylor, Ben Rajchart, Kadyn Emily and James Pollard make up the senior class. Also, manager Hannah Toenges and seniors from the football cheerleading, band and cross country squad were honored.
Leu and Ellis each scored two touchdowns for the Wildcats, who finished their home season at 3-1. Leu scored both of his touchdowns in the first quarter – a 68-yard catch with 9:26 left and a 32-yard reception with 3:54 to go – and now has eight touchdowns on the season. Ellis scored a seven-yard run with 3:49 remaining in the second and a four-yard run with 7:08 to go in the third, giving him nine touchdowns on the year.
On defense, the Wildcats had interceptions from Marshall and Massey. The six points allowed marked a season low for MCHS.
North Callaway, which dropped to 2-6, scored its only points on a 19-yard touchdown catch by Cashton Holloway with just nine seconds into the second quarter.
The Wildcats defeated the Thunderbirds for the second time in three years. MCHS lost to the Kingdom City school 42-38 on the road last year.
