The Montgomery County football team started its 2026 season on a high note on Friday night, cruising past the Hermann Bearcats 36-6 at JIm Blacklock Field.
It’s the second year in a row the Wildcats won their season opener and the third time in two seasons MCHS defeated its Highway 19 rivals. Last year, Hermann lost to the Wildcats in the district semifinals.
The Wildcats improved to 1-0 and are looking to finish with their second straight winning season. A year ago, they finished 9-3 and captured their first district championship in two decades.
With the win over Hermann, MCHS picked up right where it left off from 2025. The Wildcats were strong on both sides of the ball last year, averaging 31 points on offense and giving up an average of 16 points on defense.
The Wildcats never trailed against the Bearcats. They led 8-0 after a touchdown by Lafe McCurdy and a two-point conversion by Ben Cobb. After Hermann came back with a touchdown in the second quarter, MCHS scored 28 unanswered points.
It’s the first time since 2012 the Wildcats began their season with a home victory. That year, they began their season with a 56-21 win over Hermann at home, en route to a 7-4 season.
McCurdy, an all-state performer on defense last year, scored two touchdowns. He gave the Wildcats a 6-0 lead after scoring a 70-yard touchdown run with 3:59 to go in the first quarter. He gave his team possession after intercepting a Hermann pass at the Wildcats’ 30-yard line.
McCurdy scored his second touchdown with 4:31 left in the game. He scored a 29-yard touchdown run to increase MCHS’ lead to 26-6 and followed that with a two-point conversion.
Montgomery County junior Jackson Benney scored a 33-yard run with 10:45 in the second quarter to increase his team’s lead to 14-6 at halftime.
Senior Isaac Hinkel caught a 10-yard touchdown pass by Benney with 10:32 remaining in the third quarter to increase the lead to 20-6. He recovered an onside kick to start the second quarter.
Cobb completed the game’s scoring with an 11-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion with 1:01 left in the game.
The Wildcats will be back in action next Friday night with another home game, this time it will be against the California Pintos. California began its season on Friday with a 46-14 loss to Logan-Rogersville.
