The Montgomery County football team suffered another loss at South Callaway on Friday.

The Wildcats wrapped up their regular season with a 44-15 loss to the Bulldogs on the road. They led 15-14 early in the third quarter before South Callaway scored 30 unanswered points. MCHS lost at South Callaway for the ninth consecutive time. The Wildcats have not won a game at the Mokane school since Oct. 20, 2006, when they beat South Callaway 64-14 in a Class 2, District 5 quarterfinal game.

The Wildcats' last win over the Bulldogs was on September 2020, a 41-20 victory at Jim Blacklock Field.

MCHS ended its regular season at 6-3 overall and 5-2 in Eastern Missouri Conference play. The Wildcats finished in a tie for second with South Callaway in the conference standings.

MCHS will find out its district tournament opponent within the next couple of days. The Wildcats are in the Class 2, District 2 pool that includes Jefferson, St. Pius, Grandview, Priory, Hermann and Lift For Life. After the loss to South Callaway, the Wildcats remained in sixth in the points standings.

MCHS dropped to 3-2 in road games. It is likely the Wildcats will start district play on the road.

South Callaway snapped MCHS’ season-high, three-game winning streak. The Bulldogs also concluded their regular season at 6-3 overall.

The Wildcats’ 15 points marked a season-low. Seniors Dayton Simmons and Jacer Brower provided the offense, scoring a touchdown apiece. They both have seven touchdowns this season.

A three-yard touchdown reception from Simmons and a two-point conversion from senior Mason Leu tied the game at 8-8 with 28 seconds left in the first quarter.

A 57-yard touchdown catch from Brower and a point after touchdown from senior Christian Naylor with 9:05 to go in the third quarter gave the Wildcats a 15-14 lead.

But South Callaway quickly responded with a four-yard touchdown run from quarterback Tayber Gray with 5:01 left in the third, giving the Bulldogs a 22-15 lead. Gray scored another touchdown with 21 seconds in the quarter, giving him three in the game.

During its 30-0 run, South Callaway forced five turnovers, all of them on interceptions.
