The Montgomery County volleyball season came to an end on Tuesday as the Wildcats fell to North Callaway 14-25, 22-25 and 21-25 in a Class 2, District 6 quarterfinal match at Hermann High School.
The Wildcats finished their season at 3-24-3, marking it the second year in a row they finished with 20 losses or more. They beat Bowling Green, Mexico and Christian Fellowship for their only wins.
North Callaway improved to 17-9-2 and advanced to play Linn in the district semifinals at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
MCHS lost to the Thunderbirds this season. The Wildcats lost to the Kingdom City school in three games on Sept. 4 at home and in three games on Sept. 18 on the road.
North Callaway ended the high school volleyball career of Kylie Powell, the Wildcats’ only senior. Powell played with the MCHS program for three years.
MCHS trailed North Callaway 9-4 in the first game. The Wildcats got within 17-14 before the Thunderbirds went on an 8-0 run to take a 1-0 lead in games.
The Wildcats rallied to tie the Thunderbirds at 20 in the second game, but were unable to take the lead the rest of the game.
MCHS trailed 8-3 in the third game before rallying to tie it at 16-16. That’s as close as the Wildcats would get as North Callaway went on a 9-5 run to win the game and match.
MCHS was the No. 6 seed in the six-team tournament at Hermann. A year ago, the Wildcats traveled to St. Charles to participate in the Class 2, District 5 tournament and were seeded second, but lost to Whitfield in the semifinals.
