The Traveling Trophy will remain at Montgomery County High School for at least another year.

The Wildcats pulled off the sweep over the Wellsville-Middletown Tigers in the 15th annual Pink Out doubleheader on Friday night at MCHS’ Ballew & Snell Court, winning 53-9 in the girls game and 91-11 in the boys game. It’s the fourth year in a row the Wildcats captured the Traveling Trophy in both boys and girls divisions in the Pink Out event, which raised money for cancer awareness.

The two schools raised a record $7,722, which included money from concessions, rally towels, pom poms and food. All proceeds of the event went to the Helen Reagan Cancer Fund, which began in 1991 in honor of the Montgomery County resident who lost her battle with cancer. For the last 14 years, both MCHS and W-M have raised thousands of dollars to help promote cancer awareness.

Pam Walton, who worked as a music teacher at both W-M and MCHS for over 30 years before retiring in 2024, was the guest speaker between games. She was diagnosed with stage zero breast cancer years ago and is currently cancer free.

The MCHS boys improved to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in Eastern Missouri Conference play with the win over the Tigers. The 91 points marked a season high.

All 10 seniors scored at least one point for the Wildcats. Lyric Kemp led the senior class with a game-high 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Adrian Combs and Wyatt March were the other seniors in double figures, scoring 12 points each.

Sophomore Jackson Benney finished with 13 points for MCHS, which is looking to win the EMO championship for the fourth year in a row.

The MCHS girls picked up their first EMO win of the season with the victory over W-M. They improved to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in league play and bounced back from a 53-46 loss to Silex in their EMO opener three days before.

Emma Rodgers scored 25 points with three 3-pointers to lead the Wildcats, who won the Pink Out game for the 16th year in a row.

A year ago, MCHS edged W-M 42-39 in a contest that was decided in the final minute. This year, the Wildcats raced to a 9-0 lead and never looked back.

The MCHS boys and girls return to action on Dec. 29, when they compete against Macon in the Peak/Sport and Spine Shootout at Moberly Area Community College. The boys will play at 2:30 p.m., followed by the girls at 4 p.m.

The W-M boys dropped to 0-8 with the loss to MCHS. Andrew Maskey led the Tigers with five points.

The W-M girls dropped to 4-2 and had their three-game winning streak snapped. Julieanna Dodd was the Tigers’ leading scorer with four points.

The W-M girls return to action on Jan. 2 with a road game against South Callaway. The W-M boys will be back on Jan. 6, when they take on Bucklin with Macon County in the first round of the Madison Tournament.
