The Montgomery County football team didn’t celebrate another victory on Hermann on Friday night.

The Wildcats’ season ended at 6-4 with a 27-14 loss to the Bearcats in a Class 2, District 2 quarterfinal game at Hermann, making it the third year in a row MCHS was eliminated in the district quarterfinals.

Two months ago, the Wildcats came back from a 14-0 deficit to beat Hermann 27-21 in the season opener for both teams. On Friday, they were outscored 14-0 in the second half to be eliminated in district play.

MCHS junior quarterback Jacob Hogue scored a two-yard touchdown run to give his team a 7-0 lead. After Hermann rallied to take a 14-7 lead in the second quarter, the Wildcats tied it with a 52-yard touchdown catch by senior Dayton Simmons, who caught a 23-yard touchdown pass in the Aug. 25 meeting with Hermann that broke a 14-14 tie.

The Bearcats, who improved to 7-3, got a 70-yard touchdown run from quarterback Trenton Lampkin with 2:08 left in the third quarter to take a 21-14 lead. They extended their lead to 13 points by getting a nine-yard touchdown catch by Nolan Brune with 4:31 to go in the game.

Hermann, the No. 3 seed in the seven-team district tournament, will play either Lift For Life or Grandview in the semifinals next week. The Bearcats snapped a two-game losing streak with Friday’s win.

The Wildcats, who were seeded sixth, had 13 seniors who played their last high school football game on Friday. They were Simmons, Jacer Brower, Jace Ellis, Wes Cobb, Ben Rajchart, Landon Massey, Bryson Hoffman, James Pollard, Kadyn Emily, Weston Marshall, Mason Leu and Chase DeJesus.

Marshall finished with two interceptions. His interception at the 50-yard line in the first quarter set up Hogue’s touchdown.

The Wildcats finished with their fourth winning season in five years after going 2-8 last year. They lost their last two games of the season.
