A long streak came to an end for the Montgomery County football team on Friday.
For the first time in 20 years, the Wildcats celebrated a victory at South Callaway HIgh School as they came from behind to knock off the Bulldogs 8-6 in a non-Eastern Missouri Conference game.
The Wildcats improved to 2-2 and snapped a two-game losing streak in which they were outscored 87-12 to California and North Callaway. They will play another road game on Sept. 25 as they travel to Van-Far to take on the Indians, who were coming off their first win of the season on Friday, a 38-34 victory over Mark Twain.
MCHS’ last victory at South Callaway was on Oct. 20, 2006, when it defeated the Mokane school 64-14 in a Class 2, District 5 quarterfinal game. The Wildcats lost 10 consecutive games at South Callaway before snapping that streak on Friday.
A year ago, MCHS defeated South Callaway 46-6 at Jim Blacklock Field for its first win over the Bulldogs since 2020.
Senior Lafe McCurdy provided the game-winning points for the Wildcats in Friday’s game, scoring a two-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion with 38 seconds left in the fourth quarter. McCurdy now has five touchdowns on the season. He scored touchdowns in all four games this season.
An interception by junior Lucas Bender with 4:25 left in the fourth set up the game-winning points for MCHS. He picked off a pass by South Callaway’s Aiden Jenkins and gave his team possession at its 43-yard line.
McCurdy’s touchdown ended a 10-play, 57-yard drive. South Callaway committed a face mask penalty during the drive, giving the Wildcats the ball at the Bulldogs’ 27-yard line.
Friday’s game was scoreless in the first half. The Wildcats stopped South Callaway on fourth down twice and the Bulldogs missed a 25-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter.
South Callaway, which dropped to 2-2, took a 6-0 lead on a 33-yard touchdown run by Eli Hutchinson with 7:02 left in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs had the ball at their 45-yard line when Bender intercepted Jenkins’ pass. After MCHS took the 8-6 lead, South Callaway had a chance to win the game, but Jenkins’ fourth down pass was incomplete with one second on the clock.
