Youth group makes donation to Shriners Hospital

Posted

The Larry Richards Club is a youth group formed of fourth and fifth graders at Jonesburg Elementary School and is sponsored by the Jonesburg Optimists. The club learned about civic organizations and community services and how to conduct meetings.

Each year, the club has a pancake breakfast and donates the money to a worthy cause that it chooses. This year, it chose to donate the money to Shriners Hospital.

The Shriners Hospital System was founded in 1922. It consists of 24 hospitals in the United States. The St. Louis hospital opened in 1924.

Children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all service in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patient’s ability to pay. It costs $26 every second to deliver that care. It operates five days a week.

This year, the club was able to donate $2,100. The local Shriners added $1,000. A total of $3,100 was given. The Optimists and Shriners arranged for them to present the checks at the hospital. Shriner Bob Sellenriek, Optimist Sam Cobb and their teachers, Miss Hunt and Mrs. Fitzpatrick, accompanied the Larry Richards Club members to present the check.

Club members returned to Optimist Park to be treated with a pizza/soda party before returning to their classrooms.
