Maxine Witte

Virginia "Maxine" Witte, 91, of Rhineland, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2024 at Hermann Area District Hospital.

Maxine was born in High Hill on May 25, 1932, the daughter of the late John P. & Virginia (Whitman) Wiss. She was the widow of Howard Lee Witte. They were united in marriage on October 12, 1950 in St. Louis. To this union, 13 children were born. Howard and Maxine shared over 70 wonderful years of marriage together.

Maxine was a member of the Church of the Risen Savior in Rhineland, where she was the church organist for many years. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and the St. Ann's Ladies Sodality and she served as the city clerk for the Village of Rhineland.

Maxine was a homemaker; it was a full-time job wrangling 13 kids. She also employed with MFA Coop #130 in Rhineland as a bookkeeper and for her & her husband's business, Witte TV.

Maxine is survived by a son, Steve Witte and companion Minnie Humphrey of Fulton; a daughter, Janet Cobb and husband Dave of Montgomery City; a daughter, Jo Ann Mattingly and husband Dave of Lake St. Louis; a son, John Witte and wife Jeanie of Hermann; a daughter, Mary Ellen McCleary and special friend D.S. "Jay" Jayamanne of Jefferson City; a son, Keith Witte and wife Sheila of Hermann; a daughter, Linda Ochs and husband Greg, of Lee's Summit; a son, Brad Witte and wife Susan of Fenton; a daughter, Tina Hartzell of Santa Fe, N.M.; a son, Mike Witte and wife Cheryl of Wentzville; a son, Tim Witte and fiance Lynette Moore of Forest Hill, Md.; a brother, Floyd Wiss and wife Jane of Joplin; and 30 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, David and Phillip Witte; a daughter-in-law, Debra Witte; a son-in-law, Robert McCleary; seven sisters; and one brother.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. on April 2 at Toedtmann & Grosse Funeral Home in Hermann.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on April 3 at Church of the Risen Savior in Rhineland with Father Philip Niekamp officiating.

Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Rhineland. Memorials may be given to the Church of the Risen Savior or Rhineland Park.
