Wellsville-Middletown’s R-I voters rejected a $1.9 million no-tax increase bond issue in Tuesday’s election, according to unofficial results.
A total of 204 voters (48 percent) were in approval of the issue known as Proposition K.I.D.S., but the measure needed a four-sevenths majority to pass. A total of 219 voters (52 percent) were against the measure.
The measure would have approved funds to help pay for improvements at the elementary and high schools. The projects included new metal siding, metal roof, gutters, new insulation and secure entry renovation for the elementary school and asbestos flooring removal, new flooring and kitchen equipment for the high school.
County voters approved a three-percent sales tax on recreational marijuana, the maximum local tax allowed by the 2022 state amendments that legalized the drug. A total of 879 voters (73 percent) approved the measure, while 317 voters were against it.
Montgomery City and New Florence and High Hill voters approved the three-percent sales tax on marijuana. In Montgomery City, a total of 174 voters (83 percent) approved it, while just 35 voters (17 percent) were against it. A total of 56 voters (67 percent) approved the measure, while 27 voters (33 percent) were against it in New Florence.
In High Hill, voters approved that a four percent license tax on the gross receipts of any business supplying natural or manufactured gas for compensation should be implemented. A total of 17 voters (81 percent) said yes to the measure, while four voters (19 percent) said no.
Karl Finke, Karl Queathem and Maria Stille were re-elected to the Montgomery County R-II School Board. Howard Steele (Wellsville), Aaron Winter (Middletown) and Beth Nelson (New Florence) won contested mayoral races in their respective cities. Jock Bryson defeated Elizabeth Baig 66-42 in the Wellsville Second Ward race and Roy Butts edged Marvina Perkins 26-25 in the Middletown Alderman At-Large race.
The voter turnout in the county was 14.9 percent.
