Area libraries hold Summer Reading Programs

Both Montgomery City and Wellsville’s libraries had their Summer Reading Programs get off to a flying start.

The libraries had huge turnouts in the opening event of their respective programs. Wellsville had 12 children attend the first day of its program, which was June 2. The following day, MCPL had 25 children and adults participate in Pastiche Night, which allowed them to make Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night with numerous art supplies without paint.

The theme for the summer reading programs of both libraries – as well as all of the libraries across the country – is Color Our World. For the next month, the libraries are having art-themed programs, activities and crafts.

Both libraries will have their summer reading programs last until late July. MCPL has 22 programs that are scheduled throughout June and July. The Wellsville library has its programs scheduled for 1:30 p.m. every Tuesday.
MCPL’s Pastiche Night lasted two hours. Pastiche is a creation that imitates works from an artist or a group. Participants used pipe cleaners, beads, tissue paper, fabric, foam, yarn, flowers, scrapbook paper and a black canvas to make their project. MCPL librarian Luanne Andrews was the head coordinator of the program.

Other programs MCPL will have during its Summer Reading Program include the Pigment Of Your Imagination program by Will Stuck on June 18, the Fishin’ Magician on June 23, International Mud Day on June 28, an insect program on July 1 and an ukulele program on July 10.

On the first day of the Wellsville’s Summer Reading Program – which is called the Mart E. DeTienne Summer Reading Program – children learned about primary colors and participated in a storytime in which director Jeana Houf read Dog’s Colorful Day. A book about animals with primary colors will be read each week during the program. The children also made a stained glass project.
The Wellsville library will have a visit from Missouri Conservationist Ethan Reagan on July 1 and Mad Science on July 15.

For more information on the Summer Reading Programs for both libraries, call MCPL at 573-564-8022 or WPL at (573) 684-6151.
