Chiyo Futhey, 91, formerly of Montgomery City, passed away peacefully July 10, 2022 at St. Andrew’s of New Florence.

Chiyo was born May 10, 1931 in Urasoe, Okinawa, Japan, the child of Kame and Kiyo Tamashiro. Chiyo met and fell in love with James E. Futhey, who was serving in the Korean War. The two were married September 3, 1953 in Naha, Okinawa, Japan. She came to the United States with him after his service was complete and became a U.S. citizen on August 31, 1960. Chiyo was proud of her citizenship and was a very patriotic American.

Chiyo worked at and retired from Beacon Shoe Factory after many years of service. In addition, she was a housewife, gardener, gifted seamstress and quiltmaker. She said when she arrived in the United States, she did not know how to cook. However, she mastered the skill and became known as an excellent cook, with her specialty being fried chicken. You could always count on a tasty treat in the fridge (that is where she kept the chocolate candy).

Chiyo is survived by a sister-in-law, Leona (Larry) Coleman, of Warrenton, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Futhey; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Thelma and Charles Futhey; brother-in-law, Marvin Futhey; and sisters-in-law, Mary Futhey and Bertha Roark.

Chiyo will be loved and missed by all who knew her.

Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m.-10 a.m. on July 16 at Pitman Funeral Home in Jonesburg. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Jonesburg City Cemetery in Jonesburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made payable to Jonesburg Cemetery Association in care of Pitman Funeral Home, P. O. Box 126, Warrenton, MO 63383.
