County resident enjoys success with Hot Cocoa Bombs

Posted

Three years ago, Makaylah Bush became a first-time entrepreneur when she started a hot chocolate business called Hot Cocoa Bombs by Makaylah.

Now, it is a popular business for Montgomery County area residents.

“It’s huge when it comes to the holiday season,” said Bush, a Montgomery City resident. “It definitely helps out with my income a lot. It’s insane to see that I have returning customers.”

Bush and her Hot Cocoa Bombs will be in attendance on Dec. 9 at the Christmas Gift and Craft Show at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Montgomery City as part of a busy Hometown Christmas weekend.

Hometown Christmas starts on the evening of Dec. 8 with plenty of activities and all of the town’s businesses opening late. It ends on Dec. 10 with a light display at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.

“I’m super excited,” Bush said. “I always do good at Hometown Christmas. I normally sell out.”

Bush’s business sells hot chocolate bombs, which are chocolate spheres that are filled with cocoa powder and marshmallows and are put into a mug with hot milk, turning it into a cup of hot chocolate. Bush said she first came up with the idea of making hot cocoa bombs in 2020 after seeing them on social media.

“I made some myself,” Bush said. “Then, I posted it on social media. I sold out of them within the first hour.”

Bush runs her business from the end of November to the end of February. The weather gets cold during that time. She starts promoting her business in November.

“I look forward to it a lot every year,” Bush said. “I like to make products for people and hear the reviews on how much they enjoy it.”

Bush said it takes her about 20 minutes to make a hot cocoa bomb.

“I make them to order, so I don’t have any in stock because I like them to be as fresh as possible,” Bush said. “So once I get the order, I’ll make them. It’s a lot of work.”

Bush graduated from Montgomery County High School in 2015. She currently works as a full-time dental assistant in Creve Coeur.
