For the last nine years, Jessica Fischer has run an agency that helps provide services to senior citizens.
Now, the Montgomery County resident has added a new duty. She’s the owner of Bluebird Quilt Co., which sells handmade items such as pocket prayer quilts, pocket notebooks and mini Bible covers.
“I have been quilting for quite some time and I really enjoy fabric, so I decided I could maybe make some creations and try to sell them and still do the insurance things,” Fischer said. “So I’m doing both.”
Fischer’s new business started in February. It is located at the Senior Health Consultants building at 112 N. Sturgeon in Montgomery City, where she has worked since 2016.
“My mom and grandpa owned the dry cleaners in this building, so I’ve always been around fabric and different materials and things like that,” Fischer said. “It’s just part of me.”
Fischer’s colleague at Senior Health Consultants, Hannah Milleson, also helps out at the new business.
Bluebird Quilt Co. has a display of prayer quilts, notebooks and mini Bible covers for purchase. The prayer quilts include a cross and a message in the back.
“So far, prayer quilts are by far the favorites, but it (the shop) is still pretty new,” Fischer said. “So it’s hard to gauge. Now, it’s trying to spread the word of what we’re doing and the goal is to have new creations so everything is kind of fresh and there are fun new items.”
Milleson said Fischer handed out prayer quilts for everyone who was in attendance at senior day at the Montgomery County Fair last summer.
“She made enough to pass one out to everyone as a little gift and they really liked them,” Milleson said.
Fischer said her shop doesn’t sell actual fabric, but just items that are made with fabrics, vintage quilts and vintage linens.
“The goal is to have some fresh one of a kind items so it’s always a fresh look,” Fischer said. “For a lot of things, we’re using old vintage quilts that are really torn up and we’re giving them a new repurpose.”’
Fischer said she has been making quilts for 10 years.
“I made my very first quilt probably when I was at a daycare,” Fischer said. “My aunt had a daycare. All of my aunts sewed. So it’s kind of like in my blood.”
Fischer said her interest in bluebirds helped her come up with the name of her business.
“I feel like bluebirds always had a little special place in my heart,” she said. “So one day, it just clicked and I just ran with it.”
