County resident makes donation to Senior Center

Posted

When Diane O’Bannon won some ground beef from a contest that was held by Nature’s Plow, she didn’t waste any time deciding on where she should donate it to.

The Montgomery City resident picked the Montgomery County Senior Center.

“I know a lot of the seniors here, so I know they come here to eat,” O’Bannon said. “So it made sense to me to have it donated to them. There were a lot of places we could have donated it to, but I think this is probably the best because it touches everybody, the people who are inbound and outbound. It touches all of these different people in the community.”

O’Bannon won 50 pounds of ground beef after her name was randomly selected on Jan. 6 as the winner of Nature’s Plow beef contest. She donated the beef to the Senior Center on Jan. 15.

In the contest, participants had to share the Nature’s Plow Facebook post by 11 p.m. on Jan. 5 in order to win the ground beef and donate it to the area charity of their choice. More than 200 people shared.

It’s the second year in a row Nature’s Plow had its beef contest. Last year, Ellen Schaumburg won $250 of ground beef in the Nature’s Plow beef contest. Like O’Bannon, Schaumburg donated it to the Senior Center.

“It’s something that we like to be able to do and we enjoy doing,” Nature’s Plow co-owner Julie Deering said. “We know finding a high quality nutritious source of protein can sometimes be challenging. It’s so important for our seniors and youth and everybody else to have access.”

Nature’s Plow recently opened a new storefront on South Sturgeon in Montgomery City. The business started in 2014 and sells beef in four different sizes as well as fruits and vegetables. Mike Deering, Julie’s husband, is the other co-owner.

Amy Bourne, who took over duties as Senior Center director in November, was thrilled with the donation by O’Bannon.

“I’m very grateful for all that gets donated,” Bourne said. “I’m entrusted in getting to know them (the Deerings) better, realizing they live closer to me. I hadn’t really heard of a lot of places until I came here. So I’m excited. The community is phenomenal. I didn’t realize it until I came here to work. The more I learn, the more excited I get about it.”
