Almost a year after having its groundbreaking ceremony, the new Family Dollar/Dollar Tree combo store in Montgomery City will be open for business at 8 a.m. on June 8.

The 10,500 square foot store is located at 313 S. Sturgeon Street. It will have one side carrying Family Dollar items and the other featuring Dollar Tree items.

The building is owned by American Realty and Development in Belle. Developer Stephen Rollins said his last visit there was in early April.

“We’re pretty much out of touch once we turn the building over to Family Dollar/Dollar Tree, so I don’t know much about (the store’s opening),” Rollins said. “I know just from history that these stores really bring a lot to the community as far as availability of product and sales tax and employment opportunities.”

Plans of opening a store in Montgomery City began in 2021. A site selection employee named Kent Beck picked the site for the new store.

A groundbreaking ceremony which included several city officials such as Montgomery City Mayor Mike Spirz, City Administrator Steve Deves and Montgomery City Area Chamber of Commerce President Desiree Peak was held on July 19. The store was originally scheduled to be open during the winter.

Rollins said he expects a big turnout on the first day of the Montgomery City store.

“I have been in stores when they are open on the first day and the parking lots are full,” Rollins said. “I could assure you that will happen on this one, also.”

Wendy Dietz is the store’s manager. She will have at least three assistants on her staff. The store will open from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. every day.

The first Family Dollar/Dollar Tree combo store was opened four years ago. The two companies focus on opening combo stores in small towns with populations of a few thousand people. There are hundreds of Family Dollar/Dollar Tree stores around the country.

Dollar Tree bought Family Dollar for $8.5 million in 2014. Both are discount stores that sell products for at least $1.
