FBLA to honor military veterans

Hero Night football game scheduled for Friday night

When 13 Americans died in an attack in Afghanistan in late August, the Montgomery County High School Future Business Leaders of America group decided to do something to honor all military veterans.

So the group has organized several events that include a cornhole tournament, a hat and jeans day and a dodgeball tournament and will have a Hero Night Under The Lights program at halftime of MCHS’ football game against Greenville (Ill.) on Oct. 1 at Jim Blacklock Field.

“As much as we want to say this and that about students and high school kids, for them to be that cognitive of what’s going on in the world and the country and to say, ‘Hey, let’s try to do our part,’ it’s pretty cool to watch them take that kind of ownership,” MCHS business teacher Joe Basinger said. “Not just in this event, but also what’s going on in the country and try to be a helping hand when needed. That to me was probably the coolest part.”

The cornhole tournament is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 29 at MCHS’ Ballew & Snell Court. The event is open for all ages and the cost is $10 per team. Proceeds from the event will benefit the area VFW organization.

“I think it will be good,” said junior Bailey Fischer, who is the FBLA’s co-president. “It is definitely something that will bring in the whole community. It’s not just something that high schoolers can participate in, so it’s kind of nice to bring everybody in.”

Senior Sam Queathem, the vice-president, said she hopes to get her family members to participate in the event.

“I think I’m going to get my parents and my aunts and uncles and some of their friends they always played cornhole with,” Queathem said.

There will be student and adult brackets at the cornhole tournament. A concession stand will be available.

Junior Hannah Broniec, the group’s treasurer, said she’s looking forward to the tournament.

“I think it’s good because we’re getting a lot of people involved in it,” Broniec said. “It’s something new and it’s also for a good cause. I think a lot of people would enjoy that.”

Also on Sept. 29, there will be a hat and jeans day at the school, where teachers can wear jeans and students can wear hats.

At halftime of MCHS’ Hero Night football game against Greenville on Oct. 1, FBLA members will walk with a veteran on the field.

Basinger said Hero Night got started years ago by Jenny Krattli, who is the principal at Jonesburg Elementary School.

“She had the whole plan put in place before I got here,” Basinger said. “So for us to be able to continue that tradition is pretty cool knowing that she started it and it has been a long-lasting tradition. As far as veterans go, it is really awesome after what has happened this year with the Afghanistan thing.”

Also on Oct. 1, there will be a dodgeball tournament at the high school gym. The cost is $24 per team and $2 per spectator.
