Fischer continues to heat up at the plate for ‘Cats

From the season-opening game against Hermann at Kiwanis Fields, Aliviah Fischer was a hitting machine for the Montgomery County softball team in the 2022 season.

Fischer picked up all-conference, all-district and all-region awards after leading the Wildcats in nearly every hitting category. She hit .529 with five home runs, 25 RBIs, 45 hits, 17 doubles, 32 runs scored and a .906 slugging percentage. She was hitless in only three games.

“It was very validating because I put a lot of work into softball, so it was nice that I got rewarded for that,” Fischer said.

After the first two weeks of the 2023 season, Fischer is picking up right where she left off in 2022. The junior infielder hit a home run in the Wildcats’ 6-3, home-opening loss to Silex on Aug. 31, drove in four runs in the 17-1 win over Mark Twain on Sept. 5 and batted .636 (7 for 11) in the Monroe City Tournament on Sept. 2, which MCHS won with a 3-0 record.
Fischer hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh against Silex. She now has seven home runs in her high school softball career. She said despite the loss, she was glad she got a home run in the home opener.

“It felt good since it was in the seventh inning,” Fischer said.

Fischer said she was looking forward to coming back for another season to play for the Wildcats as well as play with senior Maddy Queathem, who also was named to the all-conference, all-district and all-region teams last fall.

“I was so excited,” Fischer said. “I get to play with Maddie Q again. It’s our last year together, so it’s sad.”

Fischer began last year with a seven-game hitting streak. She hit a home run against Hermann in the opening game of the Montgomery County Fall Classic, which was the Wildcats’ season opener. Three days later, she drove in five runs against Hermann. She had another five RBI outing against Owensville later in the season.

Fischer’s offensive play was one of the key factors in the Wildcats’ run to the district championship game, which they lost to Valley Park in the bottom of the ninth.

Fischer had two hits in the district finals. She said she enjoyed the experience being in the district championship game for the first time.

“It was pretty cool,” Fischer said.

This year, Fischer will look to help the Wildcats get back to their winning ways. MCHS won just nine games last year but is off to a good start this fall with victories over Hermann and Mark Twain and a tournament championship in Monroe City.

“We’ll go far,” said Fischer, who plays third base. “We should at least make it back to the district championship this year. We’re in almost the same exact district. We should do pretty good.”

MCHS is hosting the Class 2, District 4 tournament that will include Valley Park, Hermann, Elsberry and Louisiana.

Fischer displayed plenty of offensive punch for her Top Gun select softball team this summer. She hit .471 with nine home runs, 58 RBIs and 81 hits. She was one of seven MCHS players who competed in travel ball during the off-season.

Fischer said playing for Top Gun helped prepare her for the 2023 season. She played from April to July.

“There’s really good pitching,” the junior said. “They spin the ball a lot. It makes (high school) pitching easier to deal with. There are a lot of reps. So it helps me a lot with my fielding and mechanics.”

Fischer plans to compete with the St. Louis Heat 18 and under softball team during the off-season. Her older sister, Brooklynn, played with the Heat squad.

“My team was staying down in 16U,” Fischer said. “I would be able to play in 16U again, but I just wanted to play against better competition that would make me better, so I’m in 18U now.”
