Fischer enjoys outstanding season at Quincy

After playing with the Montgomery County softball team for four years, Brooklynn Fischer got to put on a new uniform this spring.

Fischer was a member of the Quincy University Hawks softball team. She was one of seven freshmen playing for the NCAA Division II school.

“I liked it a lot,” Fischer said. “Softball was good. I really liked my teammates. Everything went well. We just worked well this past year.”

Next year, Fischer will be changing uniforms again. She is transferring to Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis after just one year at Quincy.

Fischer will join a Missouri Baptist program that won 35 games and shared the American Midwest Conference regular season title with Cottey College this spring.

“I’m pretty excited for next year, meeting new people, being under a new coach and making all of those adjustments,” Fischer said.

Fischer turned in an outstanding freshman year with the Hawks, going 10-9 with a 2.76 earned run average and helping Quincy finish 22-22.
But the 2022 MCHS graduate didn’t get much action at the plate as she had just three hits out of 20 at-bats, leading her to make the decision to change schools.

“Hitting is a really big thing for me,” Fischer said. “It’s a really big part of softball for me. I didn’t really get to hit that much this past year. I felt like I wasn’t going to hit very much the next three years. So I started to look around (at other colleges). I understand in college that pitchers usually don’t get to hit, but I feel like I could bring both hitting and pitching to the table and excel in both of those. I don’t want to let my hitting go to waste and just pitch. So I looked somewhere that would let me do both.”

During her four years at MCHS, Fischer finished with over 500 strikeouts, a .571 batting average, a .667 on-base percentage, two no-hitters, a perfect game and a district championship. She earned all-state honors in her senior year.

In her freshman year at Quincy, Fischer led the Hawks in wins (10), strikeouts (112) and earned run average (2.76). Fischer said she enjoyed playing at the college level at a city that has more than 39,000 people.

“It was a big transition because I was going from a small town,” said Fischer, who is a New Florence resident. “Quincy is not big by any means, but it’s bigger than Montgomery. It was a change. Obviously, playing with older girls is a little different too. It was fun, it was competitive and I enjoyed it a lot.”

Fischer’s best performance came on April 1 against Lewis. She threw a one-hit shutout and struck out a season-high 10 batters. The Hawks beat Lewis 2-0.

“I felt good throwing,” Fischer said. “My pitches were working. My team was up. We were all in a good mood. It was just a good day. We just clicked.”

Fischer was the winning pitcher in Quincy’s 6-4 victory over Sioux Falls in its season opener on Feb. 18. She also had a pair of wins over Southwest Baptist and one victory each over Kentucky Wesleyan, Purdue Northwest, Missouri S&T, McKendree, Drury and William Jewell.

Fischer played with a Quincy team that had eight seniors, two of them were named to the all-Great Lakes Valley Conference team.

“They had the experience,” Fischer said. “I think that really helped us calm our nerves when we were in tight games and it really helped us on and off the field. They also helped us figure out how to play around tests and practices and how to manage your time correctly.”

Fischer is playing in her final summer with the St. Louis Heat select softball team. She helped the Heat win the Kansas City Memorial Invite championship in May.
