Jonesburg Elementary School held its Veterans Day celebration five days before the holiday, honoring the people who sacrificed their lives for the country.
The celebration was held at the school’s cafeteria on Nov. 6. The event had 22 veterans in attendance. After it was over, all of the 22 veterans shook hands with the students in the traditional line of appreciation.
“To our veterans, we’re truly blessed to have you here,” said JBE Principal Jenny Krattli, who was the emcee of the ceremony. “We’re proud to call you part of our Jonesburg Elementary family. Most importantly, thank you for your service and sacrifice for our great country. I hope you can see that there are so many great things happening with our youth. They’re learning from your example, courage, honor and commitment.”
The 30-minute ceremony also included eight program speakers and eight students who made writing presentations.
Students Ava Vicente, Aybree Smith, Colton Parmalee, Kenzie Wilson, Parker Calbreath, Quinn Cope, Scarlett Reckamp and Selena Allison were the program speakers. Students Ezra Birt, Hadlie Fetsch, Hunter Talbot, Merrin Schluss, Montana Wiggs, Owen Abercrombie, Trent Cope and Tucker Brooks made writing presentations about the importance of Veterans Day.
“I had the privilege of reading the third, fourth and fifth-grade essays and I can tell you our students’ work was full of pride, appreciation and admiration,” Krattli said.
Hunter wrote about why veterans should be honored.
“They risked their lives to save our country to let us have freedom in our country and to not worry about anything,” he said.
Merrin wrote about the importance of the American flag on Veterans Day.
“The American flag is important because it represents our country that soldiers fought for us and our freedom,” she said.
The ceremony also included the presentation of colors, a moment of silence, recognition of the veterans and a singing performance of “This Land Is Your Land” by the students.
JBE was the first school in the Montgomery County area to hold a Veterans Day ceremony. Montgomery County High School, Montgomery City Elementary School and Wellsville-Middletown R-I were scheduled to hold their Veterans Day events on Nov. 11. Montgomery County Middle School will hold its ceremony at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 12.
