Mattie Jean Ward Bohl, 73, of Wellsville died at 12:35 a.m. on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at the University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics in Columbia, surrounded by family.

Mattie Jean Ward Bohl was born May 9, 1949 in Mexico (Audrain County) to Clarence Hamilton Ward and Minnie Iola Powell Ward. She graduated from Montgomery County R-II School. She attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, receiving her occupational therapy degree and graduating first in her class. 

Jean married Fred Bohl on May 14, 1972 at the Bethel Methodist Church, west of Montgomery City. They were married for over 50 wonderful years. She worked over 40 years at the Audrain Medical Center as an occupational therapist. 

Jean served on the Wellsville-Middletown R-I School Board for nine years, serving as vice president for one year. She was instrumental in building the Wellsville-Middletown R-I Elementary school. She was treasurer for the First Baptist Church in Wellsville for many years. Jean enjoyed crafting, reading, painting, cooking, baking, traveling and spending time with all her family and friends. She will be dearly missed by everyone.

Jean is survived by her husband, Fred Bohl of Wellsville; four children: Carey Steele and husband, Nathan, of Lyons, Kan.; Frederick Bohl and wife, Erin, of Mexico; Katie Lehnen and husband, Jacob, of Mexico; and Elizabeth Eckler and husband, Kyle of Shawnee, Kan.; eleven grandchildren: William, Samuel, Jonathan, Lillian, Kaylee, Logan, Khloe, Vinton, Amelia, Jenna and Paul; brothers and sisters: Leland Ward and wife, Beverly, of High Hill; James Ward and wife, Dolores of Louisville, Ky., Carol Ward of Wellsville; Valerie Ward and Doug Daniels of Columbia; Michele Ward of Detroit, Mich.; and Sammy Ward of Columbia; sister-in-law, Margaret Mills of the St. Louis area; nephew, Jimmie Mills and wife, Allison of the St. Louis area; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Hamilton Ward and Minnie Iola Powell Ward; and one sister, Sybil Joyce Ward.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at Schlanker Funeral Home in Montgomery City. The Reverend Donald Deeker will officiate and interment will be in the Bethel Cemetery, west of Montgomery City. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. 

Casketbearers include Gene Tuma, Jacob Lehnen, Hugh Lehnen, Nathan Steele, Kyle Eckler and Jimmie Mills. Honorary casketbearers include Leland Ward and James Ward.
